PRINCESS OLGA ROMANOFF is a descendant of the House of Romanoff, so how is she related to the Queen?

The Romanoff family dynasty ruled Russia for centuries. However, during the Russian Revolution, many members of the Romanoff family were killed. In 1918, the Bolsheviks assassinated Tsar Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra and their five children, bringing an end to the Russian monarchy.

King George V of Britain was thought to be deeply distressed when he heard of the revolution taking place in Russia.

Many assumed King George would have had the power to rescue the Romanoffs, however there were concerns over the reaction of the British public to such a move.

Many people in Britain called the Tsar “Bloody Nicholas” and his German-born wife Alexandra did not win the approval of the British public during World War One, when anti-German sentiment was high.

Although many were killed, some members of the Romanoff family were able to leave Russia and today some descendants live in the UK.

The Romanoff’s are related to the British Royal Family, as Tsar Nicholas II was the first cousin of King George V, Queen Elizabeth II’s grandfather.

Princess Olga was also related to the Queen’s late husband, Prince Philip.

Prince Philip was born a Prince of Greece and Denmark in his own right, but he renounced his titles to marry then-Princess Elizabeth.

Princess Olga told the Telegraph upon Philip’s death: “Prince Philip was years younger than my Pa but they were quite closely related on two sides, the Danish and the Russian.

“I just feel terribly sorry for the Queen and the family, the children.”

When asked whether members of the Royal Family felt like her cousins, Princess Olga said: “No. Well, I don’t know, I have so many cousins in all directions, I don’t know what a cousin feels like. You either like people or you don’t.”

Today, Princess Olga lives at Provender House near Faversham, Kent, a mansion which Olga also opens to tourists.

Olga is currently president of the Romanov Family Association, an organisation for the descendants of the former Russian Imperial House.

Is Princess Olga married?

At one point, Princess Olga was reportedly considered as a possible wife for her third cousin Prince Charles, the heir apparent to the British throne.

However, Olga married Thomas Mathew and they had four children together, with their youngest son dying at the age of 18 months from a rare heart defect.

Olga and Thomas have been separated for several years and Olga is now a grandmother.

The Queen and Her Cousins with Alexander Armstrong airs on ITV at 9pm on Monday.
