Princess Margaretha of Sweden was born on 31 October 1934 at Haga Palace in Stockholm. She is the first child of Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten and his wife, Princess Sibylla (née Princess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha). Princess Margaretha has four siblings; Princess Birgitta (b. 1937), Princess Désirée (b. 1938), Princess Christina (b. 1943) and Prince Carl Gustaf (b. 1946 – now known as King Carl XVI Gustaf). Her full name is Margaretha Désirée Victoria.

After her relationship with Scottish aristocrat Robin Douglas-Home ended, Princess Margaretha married John Ambler on 30 June 1964 at the Gärdslösa Church in Öland. At the time, her marriage was considered unequal, resulting in Princess Margaretha having to give up her royal title and style. From then on, she has been known as Princess Margaretha, Mrs. Ambler. The couple had three children together; Sibylla Louise Ambler (b. 1965), Charles Edward Ambler (b. 1966) and James Patrick Ambler (b. 1967). The couple separated, but didn’t divorce, in 1994. John Ambler passed away in 2008.

Princess Margaretha now lives in Chipping Norton in England, which is also where British Prime Minister David Cameron has a residence. As she gave up her royal title and style, she doesn’t perform any engagements for the Swedish Royal Family, though she still gets invited to family events – her granddaughter Madeleine von Dincklage (daughter of Sibylla Louise Ambler) was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling in 2010.
