Princess Eugenie, Countess of Airlie, VA, CI, GCVO, GCStJ (Eugenie Alice Margaret Louisa b.22 August 1930) is granddaughter of George V, eldest children of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, eldest sibling of The current Duke of Gloucester, Prince Richard.
Early Life[]
Maud was born at on 22 August 1930 at 08:07 am at Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfries, Scotland, as the eldest child of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Duchess of Gloucester. Her father was the third son of George V and Queen Mary. Her mother was the third daughter of the 7th Duke of Buccleuch and Lady Margaret Bridgeman. At the time of her birth, she was 7th in line to the throne, after her uncles, The Prince of Wales and The Duke of York, her four cousins whom were the children of The Duke of York and her father.
Princess Eugenie’s mother, The Duchess of Gloucester was in labour the same time with her aunt, The Duchess of York, according to Primogeniture, The Home Secretary went to Glamis Castle to verify the birth of her cousin, who was a day older than her, The Secretary of State has been summoned to verify the birth of Princess Eugenie.
She was baptised at St.George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on 30 October 1930 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Cosmo Gordon Lang, alongside her cousin, Princess Margaret, who was just a day older than her. Her Godparents were Queen Eugenie(her paternal great-grandmother), Queen Mary, (her paternal grandmother)The Duchess of York (her paternal aunt), Princess Mary(both her paternal and maternal aunt), The Duchess of Clarence and The Duchess of Buccleuch(her maternal grandmother).
She was born during the reign of her grandfather,King George V. She was a princess by birth of the United Kingdom as she was a male-line grandchildren of a sovereign. Her full title from birth until marriage was “Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie of Gloucester”.
Maud was grew up during war years, she lives with her mother and brothers during war years. She grew up with Princess Margaret together.
