On this day
In 1887 the former army scout “Buffalo” Bill Cody’s Wild West Show opened in London. Two days later, Queen Victoria attended a private showing and The Times reported that she “expressed herself as greatly pleased”; in 1916 Lytton Strachey’s Eminent Victorians, a study of character and mores, was published; in 1945 the Channel Islands were liberated from German occupation; in 1974 the House judiciary committee opened hearings to decide whether to impeach President Nixon. The Watergate scandal impeachment led to the president’s resignation on August 8, 1974; in 2009 Jacob Zuma was inaugurated as the fourth president of South Africa after the victory of his African National Congress party in the election held the previous month. He held the office until his resignation on February 14, 2018, after losing a parliamentary confidence vote. His presidency was beset by controversy, including rulings over improperly benefiting from state expenditure and failing to uphold the constitution.

If ever you find yourself on the Carlisle-Settle railway line, why not get off at Ribblehead station? If you do, you will be following in the footsteps of the Skipton botanist Lister Rotheray, who alighted there in 1889 and discovered the Yorkshire sandwort. This low-growing plant with its star-like flower is an English subspecies of the arctic sandwort. Arctic sandworts can be found mainly in Iceland and the mountains of Scandinavia; the Yorkshire sandwort grows only among the limestone pavements of Ingleborough Mountain. Today’s botanists will have to travel a little further than Rotheray, since the plants growing in the immediate vicinity of the station are no longer there. However, in 2019 a survey recorded 30 Yorkshire sandwort colonies elsewhere on Ingleborough. Jonathan Tulloch
