A “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” Fanfiction:

“The horoscope’s fault” by Sol

He hadn’t gotten a word she said.

Something about a horoscope and how stars weren’t aligning, and how she needed him to leave.

It all seemed a little rushed; not until he was already out, at her doorstep, his eyes still squinted in uncertainty, did he realize something was off.

This wasn’t how he had hoped to spend his day with Lara. He had hoped his presence would make her laugh and that he would take her out to their favorite seashore restaurant, to get something to eat.

Cristovao had been mentally prepared for all of that, but the horoscope had to ruin everything.

Trying not to take her newest obsession personally, he went up the stairs again, knocking to the brown wooden door and waiting for her to come out to meet him again.

She did come out, and he could see that she was trying to feign indifference, but the way she was biting her lips and fiddling with the filigree bracelet on her wrist said otherwise.

He knew her well enough to tell something was bothering her and he decided that he wasn’t going to leave unless he got some real answers.

“Why did you kick me out?” He asked his head tilting to the side.

Lara groaned, her eyes meeting his in annoyance before she looked away again. “See? That’s the reason why we can never work out as a couple. You never pay attention to the things that I say… I’ve read my love horoscope for the whole month, Cristovao,” she reminded him in a tone that showed she expected him to have understood what she had said.

He glanced at her, waiting for more explanation which made her sigh. “Venus is retrograde, which means love trouble. To that, our stars aren’t aligning at all; we’re just not compatible. So… I’m breaking up with you. Now go, don’t make this even harder than it is!”

And she walked back inside, and shut the door right in front of his nose.

That had happened days ago and Cristovao still had trouble believing that she had broken up with him because of what her horoscope read.

He was back at her doorstep again with a bouquet of her favorite flowers in his hand. He wondered if he would be able to change her mind this way. It was hard getting through to Lara sometimes as she lived in her own world, and he could only hope that his actions were enough to make her realize that a horoscope couldn’t decide their future.

“Oh, it’s you again…” She trailed off as her eyes met the bouquet in his hands. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she looked down, at her feet. “What are you doing here again, Cristovao? I’ve already told you, we’re over.”

“I refuse to break up with you over a horoscope, Lara!” Cristovao replied, taking a step closer to her and feeling relieved that she didn’t push him away. “If we’re going to end things, I’d rather see us do so on our terms and not because a horoscope writer said so. I love you, Lara, horoscope or not, I believe our stars brought us together for an important reason. I’m not leaving unless you truly tell me you don’t want me anymore!”

Upon hearing these words, Lara sobbed: “I’m so sorry, I’ve missed you so much.”

And he quickly rushed to her, pulling her into his arms. There she was, he thought as he cradled her head into his chest. He wasn’t backing down without a fight for this relationship, and now he could see that he wasn’t the only one worried. She had only pretended not to care, but all was well again as she was back where she believed that she belonged, that was, in his arms.
