White House news briefing: Watch live

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is scheduled to brief reporters on Friday afternoon.

The briefing comes after President Biden drew a clear line in a Thursday address between his administration’s support for Israel in its war against Hamas, tempered by criticism for the conflict’s high number of civilian casualties, and the violence and illegal acts seen in some campus protests.

“In moments like this, there are always those who rush in to score political points. But this isn’t a moment for politics. It’s a moment for clarity. So let me be clear … Violent protest is not protected. Peaceful protest is,” Biden said in prepared remarks from the White House.

Biden had only made a passing comment on the protests prior to Thursday, condemning antisemitism but also pushing back against those “who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians.”

The briefing on Friday is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
