Portraits of Power: Half a Century of Being at Ringside

Rate this book
N.K. Singh has been a formidable civil servant, an empathetic politician, a keen chronicler of India’s socioeconomic history and the quintessential academic that academia never got. His life’s work, as chronicled in this book has indeed been intertwined with the progress India has made. In many such cases, Singh has been not just an active contributor but has also given shape to those many momentous decisions—whether through the use of diplomacy or the rigours of understanding the mechanism of the levers of power or, for that matter, by consensus building.

Portraits of Power is not just an autobiography of a man, who for several decades has played an active role in India’s march towards becoming a formidable economy; it is indeed, on multiple levels, a book that profiles myriad institutions that work in harmony to make things happen. And in everything that N.K. Singh has done, so in this book too, there is both incisive clarity and insightful anecdotal heft.

This book helps readers navigate the vast complexities of India but in a way that is stark and yet elegant.

From personal happenings to national movements, Portraits of Power covers it all.

They say politicians come and go. Kings and queens keep on changing but the thing that doesn't change is the court. In current times, it is a civil service body which stays constant in front changing political scenario. I remember people saying that our country is run by God. Because of political chaos and the corruptive nature of the front face of the country. I strongly feel the civic body and their regime kept the country on the development path.

N. K. Singh is one such prominent civil servant who served the country with the best interest of the country in mind. This book shares his personal and majorly professional life in a getting manner. If you are a fan of memoir and biographies, you will love this book. Those who want to know how a civil servant can silently serve and change the face of the country must read this book.

I know a book of this nature can be lengthy and boring, but the content of this book is properly set keeping the interest quotient in mind.

It deserves 4 out of 5.

Interesting and insightful account of a former bureaucrat (now politician) that throws light on people that remain on the sidelines of the Indian political and historical scene. This autobiography draws in reader with delightful anecdotes from both the author's personal life history as well as from the political scene. Most illuminating is the various accounts of how India's reforms in laws with regard to land, tenancy rights etc took shape from an earlier era.

This is a book that people interested in political administration and the intricate ways of the Civil Service officers and their operations should read without fail.

One of my friend suggested me to pick this book.
After buying, I went through initial pages & the Foreward being written by our Former President of India just made me sure that this is going to be a wonderful read.
I was never much into Politics, my knowledge was restricted to what was taught in schools/colleges.
This book gives the complete picture of Political background with personal touch.
It takes us back to decades and while reading readers can feel that they are knowing the Indian Political history by walking back the Centuries.

I never expected this book will turn out to be something this useful.
It is unpredictably fantastic.
The Author has written everything after a careful research.
After reading this, I can confidently suggest it to my friends.
Overall a really Helpful read.

Autobiography is not only about collecting information of that respected person but it also takes you through a journey where you get to feel the happenings of the author’s life yourself. N.K. Singh has done a great job while captivating all the incidents of his life inside this book. There are much more details besides the self-life of the author.

Mr. Singh who has been a civil servant as well as a politician shares his experiences from pre independent era to today’s pandemic situation inside this book. He explains how at his childhood he used to be amazed by his Dada’s determination, how his father’s inspiration has always kept him going. We also get to know that he shares great interest in classical music. Growing in an influential family Mr. Singh always aspired to serve his country, hence he finally joined the civil services. For the welfare of the country he needed to take some steps and to maintain those he went through lots of hardships which persuades us a lot. The present government ruling is represented vividly in the book; he has merely missed a point to put a light on. Under the sovereign of Narendra Modi what changes has our country faced, how the political situations are proceeding ahead and in future what can be the prospects towards development of our country- all these things are described by N.K. Singh in a moderately rational way. You will find lots of information regarding the social and political scenario of India inside the book. Presently the COVID-19 situation has brought up many issues and obviously government is taking steps accordingly, to know the details of which you can always dive into the book. Being a former economic lecturer he analyses very well the present economic situation of India and how in the coming days our country can flourish regarding that. Author’s decades of experience were really touching and it kept me engaged throughout. The well-shaped details regarding Indian contemporary politics were informative and awaking. Overall it’s an important book you can go for to make yourself more aware regarding social events of today.

"The goodness of the father reaches higher than a mountain; that of the mother goes deeper than the ocean."
.
"Portraits of Power:Half a century of Being at Ringside" by N.K.Singh starts with a biography of his life. But as it moves forward with quite a lot of knowledgeable information about politics, finance and much more in the country. Mr. Singh not only discusses his personal life but being a civil servant shares a lot about his experiences till date. He idealises his father's determination while growing up and his advice to keep going on. So, he decided to join civil services and serve his nation. . He showed great interest in classical music that he wanted to make his profession but chose economics as his subject. While reading about his life history, he mentioned about his and his sister's schooling. I was elated with the fact that I also have studies from that high-class school. Then he talked a lot about his school and his city. Describing about his college days and how he cracked civil service was quite intriguing. In the later part of this book he discusses the personality of the prime minister including PMO.

"Gems are polished by rubbing, just as men are made brilliant by trails."

He shared his experience when he was appointed as undersecretary in the Ministry of commerce. In the struggles of TPD he was made in charge of International Development Strategy. Then he continues to share great knowledge about his life as a civil servant. This book is an abundance of information about India's changing economy. There is an in depth description of India's complexities in a very clear way including the present government Narendra Modi. The present situation due do Covid-19 has led to many changes all over the world which compelled the government to take certain action actions. I am honoured to read the book of a man which is recognised by the whole of India. I really enjoyed reading it with all the amazing narration of his life. In order to know the amazing life and knowledge of N.K.Singh do read this amazing book.

Rating: 5/5

N. K. Singh is an Indian politician, economist and former Indian Administrative Service officer. The book portraits of power is autobiography of N K Singh Sir. The book covers a wide range of topics which include discussions on administration related issues to political issues.

Unlike other autobiographies, this book meticulously elaborates the series wise incidents in administration and political field. A very insightful read.

This book is very inspiring and one that is very insightful.
N.K Singh has shown us so much through this book, from his personal life to his life as a civil servant and politician.
This autobiography is very much knowledgeable because while reading we not only get to know about the life of the author himself but more so about the history of our country; its growth, development and advancement.
I am ashamed to say this but I do not know a lot about the history of my own country and this book has helped me progress so much on that direction. I understood so much about the workings of my government through this book and it inspired me to read even more about this topic. So one can say that I may be on the hunt for more books on the politics and workings of the Indian government.

This book is written in a very detailed manner, and the author has helped us understand about the workings of our country by going way back to pre-independence, the government under Narendra Modi, and the current situation where the world is being hit by a pandemic.
This book explores a lot of areas and I would highly recommend it for everyone.
So glad I picked it up.

The book stood as a very knowledgeable autobiography. The lucid narration of the book is really so good and detailed. The book is so brilliantly written. There was also the mention of pandemic, Spanish flu and a detailed report of the evolution of economic policy over last three decades. Light has been thrown on the health sector too. The author too beautifully mentioned that his father was his first hero and an inspiration to him. He begins by description of Spanish Flu.
There was a vivid description or an overview on the reforms that have taken place during covid 19 and other issues.
The narration is very detailed and straight forward. Obviously a different sort of non fiction so it might be liked by the fiction lover. But for me this was a unique read. I am glad that I got to read this book and got better insights and perspective.
The idea of storytelling form of narrative style was the best part of this book. Basically when we get the reports and insights or overviews on economic aspects, we see many charts and graphs, numerals and facts. But here it was all unique. Due to which it was not an economics school book but really a good reading book.
The book did not disappoint me at all. I enjoyed it very much and everything about it is exquisite.

Portraits of power by N.K Singh. This book is extremely useful. Anybody can pick it to find out about India's political framework.
It is an extremely supportive and educational read by N.K. Singh sir. A self-portrayal where the author takes us to the pre - Independence period and from that point driving us to the current pandemic circumstance.
Turning each page was energizing. Especially Chapter 9 holds the must-read spot in the book. reading about the Indian legislative issues and operations of the economy and how choices are taken the manner in which they are taken, this book is a significant report to comprehend our nation from the hallways of intensity.
The book conveys extraordinary information about Indian governmental issues and monetary addition and furthermore the significance of the writer in the Indian economy.
The book conveys precisely what it guarantees yet in addition it is uncalled for to the book in the event that I disregard the fascinating composing decisions which kept me connected all through till the end like the reality N.K.Singh has incorporated his family in it as well and the data it packs.
An absolute necessity read!

A must read to know about India

We all know N.K. Singh has been a successful diplomat, a compassionate politician, and a passionate observer of the socio-economic past of India . His work of life is actually inextricably linked with progress made by India, as is chronicled in this detailed memoir.

This book enables readers to traverse India's enormous complexities, but in a solid but elegant manner.

Portraits of Power include everything from personal events to political movements, from pre-independence to pandemic; it barely leaves anything untouched.  Hence, it truly is a book that will help its readers to understand India's yesterday, today and tomorrow.

The last few pages had a nice gallery of images, some of which were personal, while some taken on official journeys, and it was a treat to witness those interactions captured by the camera frame. It is a long book, no doubt about that, but a highly interesting one and should be read if one is aspiring to join the civil services.

This book covers the political and economical developments of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s in great detail. Author has shared some interesting anecdotes and experiences of his term in bureaucracy and then politics.
One interesting anecdote relates to How Dr Manmohan singh accidentally joined as economic advisor to Government of India and then became FM. Also, it covers the detail happenings of Maruti Suzuki pact, Bop crisis and subsequent 1992 reforms. PM Vajpayee years have also been covered in great detail starting from the 1998 Nuclear tests and then various reform such as Telecom reforms and Fiscal reforms (FRBM act).

In the later part of the book the instances have been covered in rapid and superficial manner. Expected FRBM act and work of 15th FC in more detail but was disappointed. This books reveals how the informal relations and networks are so much important in bureaucracy and politics.

Overall an average read.

A very rare and an informative autobiography.

This book is an autobiography of a civil servant and a brilliant politician. The book is set in pre-independence era and talks about the current pendamic situation too.

The author in this book talks about the various decisions taken by the government then and about the decisions taken by P.M. Modi now. He talks about his personal and professional life along with all the changes that took place in his life. He also mentioned the importance of his father as a role model in his life

Overall this book was a great informative read which gave me a detailed information about the past of our country along with throwing light on the present. The language of the book was simple which kept me hooked to it till the last page. The book also contains pictures at the end which makes it a complete package.
I would highly recommend this book to everyone.
