Satire – An Effective Tool To Fight Hatred & Political Hypocrisy!

Satire is traditionally the weapon of the Powerless against the Powerful’ –Molly Ivins

Satire is a technique employed by writers to expose and criticize foolishness and corruption of an individual or a society by using humour, irony, exaggeration or ridicule. Political satire is ridicule dedicated to exposing the difference between appearance and reality in public life. The justification for this mockery, going back to Aristotle, is that by holding bad behavior up to ridicule we might, as it were, “laugh folly out of existence.” . Although satire is usually meant to be humorous, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit to draw attention to both particular and wider issues in society. Satire is nowadays found in many artistic forms of expression, including literature, plays, commentary, television shows, and media such as song lyrics.

In the Western world, satire is being put to effective use in exposing political hypocrisy, stupidity and corruption and it works. In Sri Lanka too satire plays a similar role through medias such as theatre dramas, newspaper columns, cartoons and songs to highlight many social evils, but comparatively in lesser blatant ways perhaps for reasons of fear of reprisals. Ranjini Obeysekere in her book ‘Sri Lankan Theatre in a time of terror: Political Satire in a permitted space’ says : In Sri Lanka, satirical performances were not traditionally considered to be politically disruptive. Rather, they were read as comic interludes in ritual performances… Sinhala performers have always been able to express satire, ridicule, lampooning, by means of ritual…Theatre in modern day Sri Lanka satirizes contemporary politicians who behave like despotic kings of the past. Theatre people gets a reprieve that is denied to other activists working outside the theatre..’

In current times, making fun of those wielding power in newspaper columns can however be especially dangerous when big egos are bruised or vested interests feel threatened. Precise the reason why very few of our satirists directly take on the incumbent head of state, whoever is holding office! Political cartoonists venture a bit further, while however observing self-imposed limits. Never mind the notorious MR regime when political satire was really hazardous due to white van syndrome and other caveats, even after Yahapalanaya came to power , despite many improvements it was awful to see PM Ranil warning the journalists about what they should and should not write.

Racial and religious hatred is one such social evil which Sri Lankan society faced in acute form especially in the Post War era, the dangers of which has been a frequent subject covered by satire. For the past many years, there has been this very popular satirical drama in ‘Singlish’- Puswedilla. in which the main character was a scheming, self-serving president. Many Sri Lankans saw in him a parody of Mr Rajapaksa. The plays take on corruption and inefficiency in government, and follow real and sensitive political events closely. They are also scathing when it comes to the opposition. Each play ends with the tagline “Thank you for voting”, which is a fitting reminder to the audience that whatever they see on stage is what they voted for in real life. Cartoons in newspapers too have been very effective in exposing many a political ills and controversies. We had Camillus Perera (Siribiris) and Amitha Abeysekera in the past with their witty cartoons and columns. In recent times, especially in Sinhala newspapers, Avantha Artigala’s cartoons top the list, in my estimation, which includes exposing racist bigotry. Avantha

However, in my view, Sinhala songs have much satirical clout and play a greater part in conveying the hypocrisy of our political class and the sheer stupidity of our people. Many Sunil Perera’s songs ridicule and expose political hypocrisy and our own stupidity in continuing to believe their empty promises and elect them year in and year out. Songs like ‘Lankaawe, Apey Lankawey’ and ‘I don’t know why’ aptly capture these realities in good humour and holds in contempt our habit of blaming others for our own ills. Deepal Silva’s ‘Aananada Bhawan Ekata Wedhee Thosey Gilinawaa. Eliyata Aewidhin Yaananey Dhemalunta Baninawaa..’(‘Having Thosey at Ananda Bhawan and then talking disparagingly about the Jaffna Tamils coming out) is a classic song showing how hypocritical our nation is, referring to how the people allowed mobs to display ‘Jathyaleya’ in 1983 and set the pace to enter the worse period in history. He symbolically refers to setting fire to Ananda Bhawan in 1983 while having enjoyed the affordable food served by them – the popular Thosey feed. In another place in this song , he sings, ‘Helayaa..Helayaa.. Evaa Kaala Thalayaa kiyala baninawaa’ which means that ‘Helayaa (Sinhala man) has the Thosey feed and disparagingly calls the Tamils ‘Thalayaa’!.

This does not in any way refer adversely to the mainstream tolerant Sinhala people but only holds in contempt those opportunist politicians who allowed gangs and mobs to run riot and engage in a well-orchestrated pogrom. This song brings to light how these mobs brought shame on the Sinhala People, most of whom saved the lives of their innocent Tamil neighbours. The nation saw to their horror how JRJ came on TV after a few days of deadly 1983 riots and blamed the Tamils instead of apologising to them. There was history repeated in 2015 too, when MR also sought to brand the victims of Aluthgama tragedy- the Muslims as perpetrators. How he allowed racist goons like BBS to operate on the streets without fear or sanction which ultimately led to his downfall was common knowledge. Both 1983 and 2014 were tragic years which took Sri Lanka towards international shame, by allowing hate groups claiming to represent the interest of the majority community to alienate and marginalize the minority communities. Deepal Silva’s another satirical song starting : ‘Mey ratey Minissu: Thanikara Kelinney Pissu’ ( in this country , people basically do crazy, insane things’) highlights how as a nation we have failed and lost the plot.

It may not be satire in the actual sense, but a powerful and a thought provoking song by one of the greatest progressive singers of all time who always stood up for social justice and racial amity -Nanda Malini has lot of depth and a call for reflection to build a united nation. One of her classic bests was’ Bamunaa Wunath song’(lyrics by Sunil Ariyaratna) which appeals to our people to shun narrow minded divisions of race and religion and stand up for fairplay. She sings ‘ Helayaa Wunath jadayeku nam pahara Dhenu ..Dhemaala Wunath viruveku nam garu karanu’ which means ‘ Go against even the Sinhala person if he is evil; Honour even a Tamil if he is a hero’( she underlines the need to avoid being led by racial and religious labels but go by only the track record). In another place she sings ‘ Do not listen to glib, hypocritic talk even if those saying them happens to members of Maha Singha (who commands undivided respect among the Buddhists)’. She says ‘ respect the teachings of all religious teachers- Buddha, Jesus and Muhammed’.

Interestingly, in the last verses of this song, Nanda Malini appears to call people to action to bring down even a king if he ever displays arrogance . ( exactly what happened in 2015 when the mighty maharajaanoo was deposed) . She sings in her rhythmic voice.

‘Raise your voices even against a king if he is conducting himself improperly;
Shun the honey which will be applied in your mouth in order to prevent you from raising your voice;
Dethrone the King if he can’t be corrected.
Gain victory by joining the struggle to stand up against injustice and social evils’.

It is however unfortunate that most in Sri Lanka tend to limit these political satire to mere entertainment and do not learn lessons, and continue to commit the same mistakes such as, for example elect the same old set of ruffians and hooligans to politics over and over again despite their shady questionable track records. Despite our historic bitter experiences about the dangers of playing the racism game, it is sad that Gnanassaras are still being encouraged and allowed the licence to represent the voice of the majority. As Albert Einstein once said,’Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results’. Thus, are we Sri Lankan insane in that sense? It is high-time that social activists use more of satire- songs, dramas and Kavi(poems) to draw home the dangers of racial/religious hatred in building an inclusive Sri Lankan society, specially targetting school children and graduates, our future leaders and also to reach the village level audiences.

Satire, Self Deprecation and making light of self importance are totally lacking in the Muslim community. From mad men in Iran issuing Fatwas on Rushdie even without reading the book, to stupid protests by uneducated illiterate people to mass murder by illiterate stupid wahabi salafist Arabs, you have shown that making fun of people is a no-no. Christians do not go issue Fatwas or commit mass murder when Jesus is made fun of or even called gay. Lighten up. Some you Buddhists are the same; thinking Buddha is a god and becoming hysterical. Not to say it is good to make fun but for pete’s sake lighten up.

Pope says Islam is not terrorism. Is this Satire? Is this the Truth?

      http://saudigazette.com.sa/world/pope-says-islam-not-terrorism/

However, he did not tell the whole truth.

The whole truth is that Wahhabism, Salafism, ISIS, Boko Haram,Talibanism, etc. are Terrorism: they all follow the Devil, Satan, Iblis.

As a matter of fact satire is a good component in communication.

It should be used to ridicule, attack, highlight a weak point; in order to take a person/group indirectly to the right track or correct understanding.

An incredible ability to identify the Achilles heel of an individual or group paves the way to make the perfect satire.

Satire doesn’t blossom in minds filled with hatred.

Can you please explain this in Theological terms for us ?

A British Muslim preacher in Cardiff has stoking tensions with his radical sermons by saying it’s ok to take prisoners and sex slaves under Islam. The imam preaches at the same mosque that saw three young radicalized jihadists leave the UK for Syria.
Preaching to boys as young as 13, Ali Hammuda would deliver many of the messages associated with radical Islamic groups like Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), including that “the day of judgment is close,” according to the Daily
    Mail.

Hammuda is officially known as an English Islamic Programmes officer. He still preaches at the Al-Manar mosque, two years after three of its young members traveled to Syria to fight for terrorist organizations.

A secret recording a Koran study group was made by undercover reporter Rizwan Syed, who sent a copy to the Daily Mail. The tape was part of an investigation into jihadism by the company Hardcash Productions. It was made in October 2014.

There are a lot of confusing messages delivered by Hammuda, but what mostly shocked the British public about his sermons, is his interpretation of Hadiths, particularly ones concerning to slavery.

      HI born again

Actually you are acting like a born again as a cat on hot bricks. Just read what ‘sr’ says in his comments after yours. ‘Satire doesn’t blossom in minds filled with hatred’. This is exactly what you are .. try to understand what the writer is trying to convey. Sit down ,take your medicine what your Psychatrist has prescribed you and then read what he is trying to day. He is talking of Sri Lanka and about political satire. I think Deepal Silva was referring to made hatters like you when he sang ‘ Aye ratewy minissu thanikara kelinney pissu’. ‘Thamusey nam pissu hatanak Oye’ .Welawata beheth gannawa. (Ex- Angoda)

      HI born again

Why go out of point? is it because you don’t read the full article but as ‘sr’ says ,’Satire doesn’t blossom in minds filled with hatred.’

Whatever the article says, all you have in mind is Muslim hatred and then you vomit that stuff out. It is hightime you take your medicines on time.

This is the 21st century. Even in White Christian nations where words like “Nigger, Coon, Kaffir” were in common use until about 20 years ago to disparage black people openly. But those words are no longer accepted in the public sphere. It is wrong and offensive to call people racially disparaging names. There should be panels of people of all races and religions guiding Sri Lankan not to use hurtful phrases to insult people. So people have gone on to use more subtle words or actually have reformed. Not sure why racial insults or derogatory terms are so common in Sri Lanka.

But the real danger to the world is intolerant radical Islamic Jihadism. We saw in Bangladesh where kids from well to do families were driven by hateful brainwashing by Wahabis murdering innocent people in the name of religion. Throughout christian liberal Europe there is a backlash against open borders that allowed savage Arabs to flood Europe along with real innocent refugees. They molest women and they commit acts of terror. ISIS rapes women, takes sex slaves, uses the Quaran and Hadith to justify their savagery in the 21st century. They boil alive people; they burn people, they behead them and none of you Lankan SLMC; Rauff Hakeem, or UNP Kabir Hashim or MLM Mostapha types have come out against the rapidly spreading Wahabi Salafist intolerance. Every month more a nd more women are wearing black abayas and full facial masks. Every month more and more are copying Arabs(not the same as Muslim) and males are copying Arab clothing. NOTHING in Islam speaks against colorful clothes. NOTHING ever historically in Ottoman Empire or other places have been against colorful Hijabs or modest clothing. NOTHING in Islam forces women to be like Saudi Women.

Please get together and act now before it is too late and you bring in ISIS Terrorism to a secular nation. Bring out the rational scientific person in you.

After reading this article Indonesian jihadists started satire technique burning down six Buddhists temples. I wonder why we should not start same technique here dismantling twelve mosques here. for blood thirsty jihadist want only to act as per Koran verses and claim seventy two virgin in their so called heaven. now their almighty god Allah is in trouble CNN reported quoting Saudi religious affairs ministry officials that all the virgins manufactured in earthenware factory in heaven has been rejected by its quality control department saying that workers involved from Buddhists sri lanken as such chanting of Allahu Akbar at finishing line can not be accepted. as such virgins are ha ram not halal for Islamic martyrs use. as such Allah stopped empowerment of them with oxygen. Saudi king was asked to show cause as to why he supplied workers from non believers. he too is in trouble. it is believed that he may be fuel or fire=wood for fire in fire hell in next month or so.CNN just concluded.

you have lost the plot. you have lost the message this writer is trying to convey. He was stressing about Sri Lanka, our country. about the need to use another tool- Satire to highlight hatred and political hypocrisy. What you just did was going out of the point- talking about everything except hate campaign in sri lanka.

Hate blinds people whether it is hate shown by Buddhist, Hindu or a Muslim. All types of hate are equally distasteful . This is a psychological problem ,Buddha addressed and if you a Buddhist ,please consult a truly Buddhist monk and not another Gnanassara. Otherwise, a visit to a psychiatrist may help.

I am Buddhist. I know what other religion trying as well. if you can not see the truth first you get your mind examined.yes you may call me a racist i do not mind. you know first ISIS victims in France were cartoonist. then what hell this writer writing about. this issue not confine to our country. it is there all over.it should be overcome by global solution like world war II. all together defeated Hitler and his Nazism theories.it is the same.

you must be a typical Muslims. always out of context, out of context that is all you all know, you know your koran says your Allah purposely hide truth from non believers and it does not let non believers to understand anything. that may be the reason for your saying out of context. always when you all are in receiving end in any argument with regard to your religion Islam..

now time has come to leaders of predominantly Buddhists countries to seriously think of safety of Buddhists living in predominantly Islamic countries. they can not wage wars I know that but can ask for exchange one to one basis. like we can expatriate Muslims to Indonesia and get Buddhists from that country. likewise Thailand,Myanmar, Kampuchea, loas Vietnam can exchange Muslims for Buddhists from counties like Indonesia Malaysia Bangladesh like that. then all can live peacefully.that may be the solution. this type of thing like satire is a bullshit as far as jihad ism is concern.

    Mr Ranjith

    What do you suggest :

Should satire not be used in Sri Lanka to highlight the issues of hatred and political hypocrisy? OR
do you suggest that it is useless unless a world war is waged against Islam.

If you suggest the second option, then you are living in fools paradise.
Try to do what you can within Sri Lanka ! You fly!. Don’t try to be a cardboard sando.

After cold war ended, all other religions shamefully surrended to the Western liberalism- chritianity, Buddhism, and Judaism . The powerful Western liberalist lobby is today ruling roost. The only ideology they could not defeat is Islam. Therefore after the end of cold war , the only power fighting against the sole superpower US exploiting the world is Islam .This is the reason why US led Media is attempting to fight Islam . ISIS was created by them . Read the Chilcot report.

yes typical Muslim explanation on ISIS terrorism.we Buddhists or any other religion does not propagate conquering the world.as such no submission to any super power is applicable.your Islam and Christianity competing each other for supremacy. Both have its own deficiencies like cobra or any other snakes. super powers knows that they use those deficiencies for their advantages like gypsy man catch cobra. it can not change direction but it can cover distance as such gypsy man change direction it become helpless and man catches him on his upper corner and remove teeth that can be used for injecting venom, like that USA uses some verses in Koran and use great faith of youth toward Koran.ultimately only the snake without venom easily submitted to their masters.

it is good that whatever tool ca be used for eradicating culprits you mentioned in your reply. i used first definition of writer in my first comment you challenged it. then i had no options but to challenged whole thing. tell me how many pseudo names you use in this page. i know proud-man, now dignity for all. is that all or more.anyway I have no argument with writer;s opinion but effective usage may be a problem.

Interesting. The Writer needs to be thanked for the research done.
Satire is an integral and desirable part of democratic life – with the exception of backward stoic and theocratic societies. The British have established an enviable reputation to be humorous during even times of great stress and trial. That has stood them well. Subjecting oneself, individually or collectively as a community, to wholesome humour and the ability to laugh at one’s own weaknesses or folly are illustrations of the modern democratic tradition. It was always part of our national life. Any gross interference to do away with this, as we saw signs during the Rajapakse regime (as in the case of Sunil Perera of the Gypsies), are indications of a society proceeding towards dictatorial tendencies.

Satire or what ever is not sufficient to open the eyes of our shameless politicians. take the very recent example of MR. Still eagerly and anxiously trying to come to power despite his tyranny, corruptions, nepotism and political nudity are exposed. So these mucking politicians are a bunch of mutts who are none without their nerves of modesty, dignity and courtesy. Thus, these ‘R soles’ cannot be awakened by playing ‘ ‘veena’ near their deaf ears as the sinhala maxim goes. Because, you can awaken a person who sleeps but not the one who pretends
