      Critics Consensus

This remake of Planet of the Apes can't compare to the original in some critics' mind, but the striking visuals and B-movie charms may win you over.

Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal My Homo sapiens brain was boggled by the movie's clumsiness, while my heart was chilled by the chance that otherwise mature members of my species might mistake this disjointed botch for summer entertainment. May 1, 2024 Full Review Manohla Dargis L.A. Weekly Wahlberg can’t obscure his incredulity at the words he’s made to speak or the sheer silliness of the whole thing. Without latex and a full-bodied shag there’s no hiding from this film. May 1, 2024 Full Review Kirk Honeycutt Hollywood Reporter While it's fun to revisit this nearly forgotten planet in the company of a master of movie magic, one gets the feeling that Burton never found a way to embrace this place and make it his own. May 1, 2024 Full Review Casey Chong Casey's Movie Mania Despite having Tim Burton on board, he seems to be more of a director-for-hire almost devoid of his distinctive filmmaking style. Rated: 2.5/5 May 10, 2024 Full Review Michael Sragow Baltimore Sun Not a remake but a jumbled revision that tumbles out as if from a piñata. Rated: 2.5/4 May 1, 2024 Full Review Steve Persall Tampa Bay Times Exactly what this mediocre summer movie season needs. Something fresher than dinosaurs and edgier than talking pets and cartoons. Something familiar enough to make us buy tickets, yet original enough to feel the money was well-spent. Rated: B+ May 1, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Shadow G It’s not a bad movie but it’s a really a good movie either, there are things I like about it like the make ups are really good, Thade is cool and I like Mark Wahlberg in this movie sort of but the story plot is kinda slow and all over the place it is trying to top the original and the fights are cool but the ending doesn’t really make sense but again it’s mid it’s not as bad as everyone says it is and I do with there a sequel to this one Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review luna t Terrible remake and not one true soul in Tim Burton's shop had the balls to tell him no, just no. Damn you Tim Burton. Damn you to hell. And keep your dirty hands off the classics. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Nathan W What a disappointment. I wasn't expecting a blow for blow remake of the original film, but there were major changes that completely ignore core themes from the saga. Humans are able to talk... for some reason. Chimps, who are pacifists, are in the military now. Even the main villain is a chimp which makes no sense. The costumes are leaps and bounds ahead of what was possible in the 70's, but the rest of the film pales in comparison. There's barely a coherent story to be found here, the dialogue was boring, and there was only one likeable character in the whole movie... And it was the villain! Tim Roth crushed it as General Thade. Pretty much everyone else seemed completely disinterested in what was going on. On a side note... I don't know how they can spend so much on a film and it still looks and feels low budgety. We finally got some action at the end but even that was lame. There was so much dust flying around we couldn't see much of anything. You know what... Tim Burton should be ashamed. Dull writing, a lazy plot, and uninteresting characters. A poor attempt at a remake if ever there was one. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/09/24 Full Review Zane Victor V This movie sucks ass. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review Pedro Henrique C 1h and 59m of very good entertainment, I really liked what I watched but there are several flaws in the script and a very bizarre 2001 CGI Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/30/24 Full Review ZuZoup It's pretty solid as a movie, it's entertaining, but not well made at all. The story is decent, but nothing more than decent. It's kind if confusing when you're watching it. I would not recommend it, but some people would definitely love this movie.
