About
Piazza San Carlo was designed by Carlo di Castellamonte in 1642 and completed in 1650. In the middle of the piazza you’ll find the equestrian statue of Emanuele Filiberto (known to all as “El Caval èd brons”), sculpted by Carlo Marocchetti in 1838. The porticoed buildings surrounding the piazza give space to numerous bars, cafes, and restaurants.

This is another central square in Turin on the famous Via Roma, big enough to avoid being crowded even if many people are there. An equestrian statue of the Duke of Savoy, Emmanuel Philibert, is there in the middle. The square is surrounded by buildings of beautiful architecture with porticos which allow having a coffee even if it is raining. Two interesting churches with stunning interiors, Chiesa di San Carlo Borromeo and Chiesa di Santa Cristina, stand close to each other at one of the sides of the square. There is also a famous, historical cafeteria - Caffe Torino - quite posh and expensive, I would say.

Via Roma ends or begins there. An open arena square with historic edifices, shops, eateries-cafes and 16-17c architecture enveloping al fresco. The equestrian statue in the centre and the portico-loggia fluidity in the inner perimeter allow for theatricality, spacious referentiality and a unique throbbing historic enclosure. Few compare in relative or absolute terms whether in other European historic towns (Spain, Italy, France primarly).

My visit of Turin started from one of its most iconic squares, the one nicknamed by many "the living room of Turin", the heart of the city. I will never forget the two twin churches there. The square is lively and gives you a sense of imponence.

Piazza San Carlo is a wonderful square located in the center of Torino, the main city in Piedmont Region. It was built in the 17th Century and nowadays it is one of the best squares in the city, where there are some bars and restaurants, and the two twin churches calles San Carlo and Santa Cristina, which are amazing, very very very beautiful. Also, in the middle of the square there is a statue of Manuel Filiberto riding a horse. Very nice. Also in the square there is two facades with arcades. When I visited the city, in november-2022, there was a little market of sweets: very good to have a dessert, after dinner. Too in the city!

We enjoyed taking in the scene in this square after a long day of touring. There are a number of cafes to choose from and it is extremely pleasant to sit and watch life go by in the square. If you need a break, an aperitivo or lunch - this is a great place to get it.

Square surrounded by monumental buildings with huge place to walk and run for kids. Few cafeterias and restaurants around give a chance for rest. In the middle huge monument. For sure very nice place for resting a bit while walking around the city.

Beautiful Torino, the old capital of Italy during the monarch. A very elegant downtown with different attractions. This is the magic Piazza San Carlo.

Not only is this a great open square of traditional Turin but it has some of the top old cafes from the by gone era. Make sure to stop after 5 PM at any of the cafes for a good glass of wine (try Dolcetto or Barbera) and experience the small little snacks that Turin has become famous for!

Hello, we have only a brief stopover in Turin ( the afternoon and evening) as we leave for Venice early the next morning. Based on our limited time in Turin, the Piazza San Carlo seems like a good place to spend the evening to enjoy a meal and a few drinks. I would be grateful for recommendations please, especially as GlobeTraveler 1973 had some concerns about the quality of the food and service. If anyone would like to suggest an alternative to this Piazza as a place to go, by all means do let me have your thoughts.
