Set in the heart of Cumbria’s rugged borderlands, Naworth Castle is a gateway to Britain’s historic past.

The 14th century castle is the ancestral seat of the Howard family who continue to live there today.

Whilst Naworth remains a private home, the family welcome guests at exclusive parties and sporting events.

Dating back to 1335, Naworth Castle was the stronghold of the Dacre and Howard families, built to defend England’s borderlands against the Scots and Border Reivers. 

Following a devastating fire in 1844, many of the castle’s main rooms were destroyed. However, under the guidance of George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, these were refashioned by prominent Pre-raphaelite architects. 

Today, the current owner, Philip Howard, continues to restore the estate.
