Philip of Palatinate-Neuburg (12 November 1503-4 July 1548) was Duke of Palatinate-Neuburg from 1505 to 1541, preceding Otto Henry, Elector Palatine.
Biography[]
Philip was born in Heidelberg, Holy Roman Empire on 12 November 1503, the youngest son of Ruprecht, Count Palatine of the Rhine and Elisabeth of Bavaria-Landshut. In 1505, he was awarded Palatinate-Neuburg by Emperor Maximilian I of Germany after the deaths of his parents, and he commanded two regiments at the 1529 Siege of Vienna, during which he fought against the Ottoman Empire. On 8 December 1539, he visited the English court with the hope of obtaining the hand of Lady Mary of England, the daughter of King Henry VIII of England. The two fell in love, but King Henry did not allow the marriage to happen, as Philip was the cousin of his own wife, Queen Anne of Cleves. The duke returned home, but he visited England three more times, managing to see Mary once more before his death in 1548.
