Petra Helen Moore Gill Tegetmeier (1906 - 1999)

Biography

Petra Tegetmeier (b. London 1906-d. Limpley Stoke, Wiltshire, UK 1999) was the middle daughter of the artist Eric Gill (1882-1940) and (Mary) Ethel Hester Moore (1878-1961). She was home-schooled with her sisters, Betty and Joan, but at aged 16 trained as a weaver with Ethel Mairet (1872-1952). In 1923 she was engaged for several years to the Welsh artist and poet David Jones (1895-1974), who was working with her father in Ditchling, East Sussex, and made some beautiful paintings of her, but instead she married Denis Tegetmeier, letterer, engraver and cartoonist, in 1930 and remained married until his death in 1987. They had four daughtrs and a son who grew up at Pigotts, Buckinghamshire where her family had moved to in 1928. She made tapestry works and possessed a spinning wheel thrioughout her whole life.
