My mom in law recently had a procedure in hospital for a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) condition.
A PMB condition should be paid for in full (hospital account)assuming the diagnosis of a PMB is correct and that the hospital used is the medical aids' Designated Service Provider (DSP).
I confirmed the correct diagnosis preoperatively (I am a medical doctor) and was then requested by Medshield to prove this. This was done by submitting both radiology (CT scan) and laboratory specimen (histology) results which confirmed the diagnosis as a PMB (all done BEFORE surgery took place). This was in addition to the surgeon treating my mom-in-law also submitting request for authorization as a PMB condition.
Despite the diagnosis being unequivocally proven preoperatively and us using the Medshield DSP hospital we continue to receive demands for payment due to Medshield not settling this account as a PMB in terms of the Medical Schemes Act.
As a practicing doctor DO NOT sign up to Medshield and if you are able to change medical aids I would urge you to do so. They are impossible to deal, staggeringly *********** when it comes to settling accounts and blatantly flaunt the Medical Schemes Act rules placing vulnerable patients under financial duress.
