Given that the musician is the fabulous song man Al Jolson, this should be a 5 star review. With his huge singing voice he could dominate over a big band sound. Dixieland is a natural for him and he could croon before the term had a meaning.
So bottom line first:
Al Jolson was a master entertainer and 25 selections on one CD is value. My hesitations are twofold: the selections feel thrown together. There is neither a unity nor a proper flow to the songs. There is also something of randomness to the sound quality. Some pieces are very clean others scratchy. These may have been older recordings or transfers from lower quality originals, but little seems to have been done to clean them to CD quality.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
As for the selections themselves: Cut 25 is a Yiddish song, identified as the Cantor, properly: A Cantor on the Sabbath. This is Jolson celebrating his roots. It is singularly beautiful, soulful and humorous. This one song carries more than enough value for the entire CD. A man honors his heritage, and from it you can better understand the singer's style and training.
Up tempo Al Jolson singing There's a Rainbow on my Shoulders will leave you wearing the same rainbow and again you have to smile while hearing his Me and My Gal. This is an older Jolson, singing his best-known pieces with what for him approaches an eloquence. He has to go for his signature heart tugging but here, to a modern and more cynical ear they are not as cloying earlier recordings. It may not have been possible for Jolson to sing Sonny Boy without "Schmaltzig" and so it is in this version. In his more romantic pieces the lesson I get is that he rarely needed a chorus back up. His waltzes, most famously, Anniversary Song represents a balanced controlled Jolson but also one with a large vocal range. All my Love, also in waltz time is not improved by the choral backup.
The lyrics may stray into the corny and not all lyrics meet modern standards of racial sensitivity (Too many " Mammy"'s and Shuffling on the levy but ultimately Al Jolson is for when you want to hear happy singing from a man who was happiest when singing.

Since it is a recording from his shows and not a studio recording which I was hoping it would be, the quality left something to be desired.

We grew up listening to our Dad sing Al Jolson songs. My brother loved it, his wife, not so much. Too bad for her!

Get the Decca recordings. You'll want more. This is a pretty good collection of more. I recommend to all Jolson fans.

If you're an Al Jolson fan and you don't have these recordings (with quite a few tracks from his later years) in your collection, you owe it to yourself to get this CD--you'll never stop enjoying it! Although Jolson recorded many songs that don't appear often on CD (like "A Broken Doll" which so far I've only found on a 78 rpm record), this album has some of his most popular songs including some signature songs as well. The quality of the sound is fairly good considering the age of these recordings; and the artwork is nicely done as well.
One thing that strikes me about this CD is that the recordings were made later in Al Jolson's career; his heyday was beginning to end about 1935 or so and it's actually great to hear him sing so beautifully during the latter years of his life (he passed away in 1950, only a year after the latest recordings on this CD end). There's so much to like here that I doubt any Jolson fan will be disappointed. Although there's not a bad track to be found here, I have my favorites as you will, too. For example, we get excellent numbers including "Is It True What They Say About Dixie;" a strong version of "Swanee;" "Toot, Toot Tootsie;" the passionate "Come to Me, Bend to Me" from "Brigadoon;" "Sitting on Top of the World" which is great despite the surface noise; "Keep Smiling" with that music that makes such good use of the strings; "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody;" "There's A Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder" which Al does so well that any doubt s about his talent in his later years will be put to rest; "Sonny Boy," a song Al Jolson loved to sing; the wonderful "You Ain't Heard Nothing Yet;" "For Me and My Gal;" "California, Here I Come;" "The Anniversary Song;" "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy;" "My Mammy" which can seem dated but is really meant merely as an ode to motherhood and mothers everywhere; "Waiting for The Robert E. Lee;" "By the Light of The Silvery Moon;" "Alabamy Bound;" "Just One of Those Things" and the closing track, "Alexander's Ragtime Band."
Jolson fans can rejoice that this CD has been released; this really is a must-have for the diehard Jolson fan. Al Jolson had genius so great that he is still remembered even in our times; and that's grand. I highly recommend this album.
