Kid Cudi - Passion, Pain, & Demon Slayin' (2016)
Where our protagonist refuses to GET OFF THE WEED.

Frequency - The best thing I can say about this opener is that it's interesting. This is no doubt due to Plain Pat and MIKE DEAN being on the production, but I digress. It's just not enough to make me come back to this as Cudi's sleepy and at times annoying vocal and lyrical contributions make for a tough listen. I can't say I enjoy Cudi rapping about, and I quote, "sucking boobs". Keep or Skip?: Skip.

Swim in the Light - The MIKE DEAN rich synths seen here are enjoyable, but again, Cudi's contributions ruin it for me as his repetitive hook gets old really fast, and the verses are completely forgettable. Although one compliment I will give is that there are some killer harmonies on the latter half of this track. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

Releaser - If you listened to the first three tracks and stopped the record I wouldn't blame you. Cudi's completely forgettable hooks on this track will leave you bored and confused as to why our protagonist randomly starts speaking French. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

By Design - Is it a coincidence that the first good song on the record has Andre 3000 on it? No it's not. But I will say that even with 3 Stacks great hook, Cudi does a good job himself. Pharrell's upbeat production contributions are stellar as well. Keep or Skip?: Keep.

All In - For whatever reason, Cudi sounds extra whiney on this song. I don't know if that's actually the case, but I normally enjoy Cudi's vocal contributions and for whatever reason they sounded particularly annoying here. As far as production goes, there are some heavy drums that come in during points that would be seen if as a plus if they were thrown on to a song that was memorable in the slightest. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

ILLusions - I wish that MIKE DEAN didn't go with the minimalistic production here because I feel like Cudi's hook and verses could have benefitted from a more lush instrumental. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

Rose Golden - Oh yeah sure Cudi, just casually throw one of the best songs in your entire career in the middle of this track list out of no where before going right back to the album being bad. I genuinely love this song. This is that lush production I was talking about that "ILLusions" needed. This shit is GORGEOUS. WILLOW and our protagonist both do a phenomenal job in their respective roles. Their voices play off of each other so well. Cudi's flow during the verses is so damn good it's like CRACK. Please go listen to this, it's possible that it could be the best song in our protagonists entire career. Keep or Skip?: Keep.

Baptized in Fire - I feel like Travis Scott being on this song distracts people from the fact that it's not actually that good. I know it's an unpopular take but I think both Cudi and Travis have incredibly boring contributions to this. Cudi in particular has some eye roll worthy bars. The production from MIKE DEAN and Plain Pat is the highlight, but it can't save the song. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

Flight at First Sight / Advanced - This government mandated double track sees a first half with bright synths and repetitive, boring Cudi bars, and a second half that sees... I don't even know what the fuck is going on in the second half. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

Does It - Even if I don't particularly enjoy the hook here, I'll be damned if Cudi doesn't rap his ass off on this track. It's rare we see pure rap tracks from our protagonist, and they aren't always hits, but this one is. Keep or Skip?: Keep.

Dance 4 Eternity - You know Cudi, if you, and i quote, "like to see that body wet", do you really have to tell me about it? I bitch about these sensual Cudi tracks a lot. Maybe more so than I would if it were someone else singing it. But I can't help it man. I really can't. Something about our moon man protagonist singing about how he can "feel it dripping" really makes me uncomfortable. I feel like listening to Cudi songs like this adds to my body count and I did not consent. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

Distant Fantasies - I have no doubt that this is the worst song on the record. He is talking about, believe it or not, his fantasies for the entire nearly five minute run time. It's more uncomfortable than the previous track which to be honest I didn't think was possible. Except this one is worse because on top of it being way too long, the production is SO DAMN BORING. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

Wounds - Cudi opens this introspective cut with some of the most over exaggerated "wee's" and "woo's" of his vocal career. Also, somebody tell Anthony Kilhoffer and J Gramm that you can't just add heavy drums and one or two synth lines and call it a day. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

Mature Nature - I mean, does anything actually happen in this? I guess there are some interesting strings throughout, but nothing you can't find on the rest of the record. This is just boring. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

Kitchen - Dot da Genius helps on the production for "Kitchen", and he is who I assume added those trap-sounding drums. They work surprisingly well, in fact I really enjoy this cut. It's not the masterpiece that a song like "Rose Golden" is, but it's really fun for what it is. Keep or Skip?: Keep

Cosmic Warrior - This feels similar to "Mature Nature" in that it feels like there were very little ideas happening here in the first place, and for it to go on for four minutes makes that more and more apparent. I will say that there is a small harp section towards the end that is genuinely very pretty. Too bad it's LITERALLY ONLY 15 SECONDS LONG. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

The Guide - Cudi, how did you manage to fumble a song with Andre 3000 on it? You couldn't have just left it at "By Design"? You had to do this shit? 3 Stacks does have a good verse, obviously, but it's not enough to save whatever the fuck Cudi was doing here. I mean was the moaning really necessary? Keep or Skip?: Skip.

The Commander - After Speedin' Bullet 2 Heaven I was sure Cudi wouldn't have the balls to ever pick up and acoustic guitar again, but alas I hear some layered underneath this relatively mundane instrumental. Speaking of our protagonist, he is either forgetting that he has already used this exact hook on "Heart of a Lion (Kid Cudi Theme Music)", or he is paying homage to that song. If he is referencing it then it certainly doesn't feel earned as this song is lame as fuck, unlike the one it's paying homage to. This just makes me want to go listen to that instead. Keep or Skip?: Skip.

Surfin' - As much as I love Cudi's contributions on this fun outro, a lot of the credit has to go to Pharrell Williams as all of his production choices are wonderfully executed. That exciting drum pattern with the choir and trumpets to go along with it works SO DAMN WELL. As lame of a listen as this record is, this was one hell of a way to end it. Keep or Skip?: Keep.

Final Thoughts: Passion, pain & Demon Slayin' is an attempted return to form after the disastrous deviation that was Speedin' Bullet 2 Heaven. Similar to his previous album, this shit is WAY too long. Most of these songs, if not removed entirely, could have been shaved down at least two minutes. I mean there is only one track here that is shorter than four minutes long. That would be alright if the songs themselves could justify that length, but a lot of them don't. Cudi sounds like he is in a better place on this project though, which is good. However, what is not very good is the music itself. This record has a very specific sound, and I feel like that sound works against Cudi for a lot of the album. But when it works, it REALLY works, like on "Rose Golden" which could easily be the best song in Cudi's entire career. I also sure as hell wasn't expecting to come out of this listen with a higher body count, but "Dance 4 Eternity" and "Distant Fantasies" made sure of that. The closest album in Cudi's discography I can compare this records quality to is Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon. There are a few songs here that are genuine highlights of our protagonist career, and the rest can be thrown in the garbage.

Top 3 Tracks: "By Design", "Rose Golden", & "Surfin'".

Spaced Out & Uninteresting
Airy and atmospheric but ultimately empty. It's nearly 90 minutes so I had to do this in two sittings but man I felt like I was crawling through this. Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin' was marketed to me as Cudi's redemption but it's literally no different from what he'd do 3 years later in Man On The Moon III: The Chosen. The features are fine, as is the production. I don't care about the mediocre harmonies he musters out and the rapping is pretty bad. It's a shame that Cudi had so much potential just to see it squandered.

Final Verdict: Cudi fans will like this, because they like anything he does, but I don't see many redeeming qualities about this

Good.
Though it can, at times, be a lyrical wasteland of repetition and short song ideas dragged out to 3-4 minutes, Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin' makes up for it with a solid amount of well-produced tracks and some strong performances and features.

Some of my favorite things from this album:

- Vibes all over. Even for songs here where there’s a lot of repetition, or the vocal performances aren’t the strongest, or the lyrics are either not there or plain bad, the vibes and production can carry and oftentimes make songs worth a listen just in the background or just to chill.
---> As mentioned, though, some songs, like Distant Fantasies and Releaser, make this impossible with some impossible-to-ignore awful bad stupid dumb lyrics, and other songs might not have the same strength production-wise that other songs do, which lessens the strong, enchanting impression that I think the album would've been able to leave.

And my least favorite things:

- There are so many weak or underwhelming or substanceless moments on this record, where even the production can't fill the void or somehow makes it worse, aaaaaaaaargh… It’s actually annoying just how correct Anthony Fantano was in saying that Cudi has an awful tendency on this record to stretch a minute’s worth of song ideas into three, four, even five minutes.

- Flight At First Sight is genuinely a really pretty tune and I love listening to this first leg of the song. Then, it becomes one of the most insulting things I’ve ever heard in a Cudi album, in terms of just how sudden, poorly executed, and totally unenjoyable the beat switch and second half, "Advanced," is. I do not like it. It is the genuine worst part of the record, it ruins the great start to the song, and is a blemish. Pharrell...

one of my favorite cudi albums
Kid cudi has always been one of my favorite rappers ever, this album has so many great and catchy songs that really solidify why I like his psychadelic and groovy style on this album. Sadly, there are some songs that outright suck, releaser is one of my least favorites, distant fantasies is catchy but has kind of annoying, and the second half of flight at first sight/advanced isnt very good either. However, all in has one of the best cudi instrumentals ever, thanks to mikewillmadeit's incredible production, cudis singing on this track is just magnificent too. Rose Golden is one of my favorite songs ever with its amazing string instrumental, I absolutely love willow smiths singing, I didnt find out her own music until recently and its just as great. Kitchen is another awesome track, every song on this album seems to be so damn catchy, love jaden smith on the hook. Andre 3000s two appearances on this album are very good as well, by design is my personal favorite thanks to the catchy percussion beat and the amazing hook. Pharell william appears twice as well, flight at first sight is okay at the first half and kind of falls apart, but surfin is such a groovy song, especially at the ending its the best closing track of any cudi album. The last two solo cudi songs, the commander and cosmic warrior are some of the best produced songs, I really like the percussion and guitar of the commander and the hook (NO NO NO NO NO NO YEA YEA) is so simple yet such and an earworm. All in all, this album is one of my favorite kid cudi record, second only to man on the moon part 2, which has also aged incredibly well. Cudi has always been such a talented rapper and singer, from his humming to incredibly catchy hooks, this dude makes some of the best and unique songs ever, thank you scott <3.

koreanspicygarlic doesn't understand the Kid Cudi hate part 6: the Redemption Album Edition
After the complete mess that was Speeding Bullet 2 Heaven, im sure many people had no idea what to expect from the next Kid Cudi album. Would it be a return to form or a further decline into squalor? Well, the rym average for this album would lead you to believe this record isn't much better, but I beg to differ. I can fully admit that I love this album. Kid Cudi returns to the style he does best and returns with a record filled with passion, pain, and, well, demon-slaying. This album is another go at a loose 'concept' where the album starts with the darkest and more depressive tracks but eventually continues into a lighter tone and hopeful mood, culminating in the extremely fun and happy-go-lucky closing track, the Pharell produced Surfin. Hope is the prevailing theme of this album, and the album title speaks to this. Kid Cudi has 'seen the light' in a way and is actively attempting to overcome his demons and find happiness. In this attempt Kid Cudi delivers on a slightly bloated 86 minutes of dense, spacey ambient pop and pop-rap, featuring sometimes heartfelt and oftentimes sensual and sexual lyrics that unfortunately don't entirely escape the shortcomings of some of his worse works. For me, the real star of the show is the production. From the lush R&B of All In to the blistering, danceable beats of Flight at First Sight/Advanced, there is a surprisingly high amount of variety to be found within the walls of this record. I would say the biggest issue with this album is its length. PPDS comes in at a whopping 86 minutes long, with 19 tracks that almost all come in at over 4 minutes long. For a pop rap album that is insanely long, and it occasionally feels like there are some filler tracks here and there. While I do like the structure of the album with 4-5 tracks for each 'Act' of the album, with each act getting progressively more light and happy, each act could have been cut down a bit for a more concise and tight runtime without the bloat. But, all that is not enough to prevent me from loving this. The step-up and return to form this album shows is amazing to see, and I am very happy Kid Cudi has managed to save his career after the disaster of SB2H.

Original Review (Written September 9th, 2020):

New Review (Written August 16th, 2022):

My thoughts on this album have changed pretty drastically since I last heard it in full. On my first listen, I thought the album was decent, but pretty slow at points thanks a to a few stretches of weak and sometimes dull songs. On a re-listen though, I’ve actually grown to like “Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’” a fair bit. It isn’t perfect by any means, but it’s an under appreciated highlight in Cudi’s discography, especially when we’re talking about his works post the first two Man on the Moon albums. The writing on a lot of the songs, like “Wounds”, “Surfin’”, “ILLusions”, “Swim in the Light” and more help to show Cudi’s journey of finding peace within him mentally.

This album, like the Man on the Moon albums, is a concept album, with the album separated into 4 acts. They are “Tuned”, “Prophecy”, “Niveaux de l'amour”, and “It’s Bright and Heaven Is Warm” Personally, my favorite if the 4 acts is “Prophecy”, mainly because it has some of the highest highs on the album. “Rose Golden” with WILLOW talks about trying to make something of yourself, even with the odds against you. “ILLusions” is one of the many great tracks about Cudi and his mental state on here, “Baptized In Fire” has a great Travis Scott feature, and “Does It” is a great way to close out the side. Act 1, “Tuned”, gives the album a good note to start on with songs like “By Design”, helped by a great André 3000 feature, the great opener “Frequency”, and one of the many highlights of the album when it comes to deep cuts. The third act, “Niveaux de l'amour” is good but it’s definitely the weakest act on here. Outside of “Dance 4 Eternity”, this is where the weakest writing on the album is, even if the writing is at worst good. It just doesn’t do much for me most of the time, especially when compared to the rest of the album. However, things do pick up when the last act kicks in, “It’s Bright and Heaven Is Warm” You have songs like the banger of an album closer “Surfin’” with great production and vocals from Pharrell Williams. The production sounds as good as always for a Cudi album, plus the guests work well with Cudi. Especially when it comes to André, who’s just great with anyone he works with, and Travis, who was heavily inspired by Cudi.

“Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’” is a pretty great album from Cudi that does tend to go a bit under appreciated. The writing is great, there are a ton of fantastic songs, the production is great, and the guests are consistently great across the board. If you want to hear more of Cudi’s albums outside of the classic ones, then give this album a listen.
