Set in 1931, the film takes place aboard a merchant ship, briefly harboured in South America. A young woman (Diane Cilento) boards the ship as a passenger, resulting in disharmony among the superstitious crew members. Virtuous seaman Anthony Steel protects the girl from the lecherous advances of captain Peter Finch.

Realising you've saddled yourself with boring handsome Anthony Steel when you could have had an 'I could fix him' situation with drunken naval captain Peter Finch.
Loved the bitter ending and moments of homoeroticism – close quarters and sweaty backs in black and white.
1931 and a small freighter sailing from South America with a cargo of cattle and a woman on board. The woman ( Diane Cilento) arouses passion in the penny pinching captain ( Peter Finch) and suspicion in the crew, after all it's unlucky to have a woman on board a working ship. Many movies set in confined spaces don't work but this one manages to convey the claustrophobic atmosphere of life aboard a small ship on a long voyage. Well acted by a great cast of British actors and efficiently directed by Roy Baker it's an interesting drama with the benefit of a terrific storm sequence toward the end of the movie. Verdict....if you like drama give it a try.

Peter Finch plays the role of Lucky Ryland, a captain who is about to retire. The film then gives us a flashback of Ryland taking charge of a ship in South America. He is forced to give a British governess named Ruth Elton (Diane Cilento) a lift.
A love triangle then develops as both Ryland his first mate Vosper (Anthony Steel) have both fallen in love with her. Who will Ruth choose as her man and who will she leave broken-hearted?

A drama about a retiring captain remembering his first command, with tensions mounting on board the cargo ship he was sailing as he is involved in both conflict with his crew and a love triangle with a passenger and his second mate. It stars Anthony Steel, Diane Cilento and Peter Finch, alongside a great ensemble cast of British actors. They were all really good in it, Finch in particular bringing a kind of anguished repression to the role of the captain. Overall, the film was an involving character study that drew me in as the claustrophobic tension built up.

A freighter full of men sails from South Africa to England with one woman (Diane Cilento) causing a lot of silly consternation between the alcoholic Captain (Peter Finch) and his skipper (Anthony Steel). Quite dull.
Two stars at most without the storm scene, but that's an amazing scene, really impressive stuff. Apart from that it's trying to make you care about barely sketched characters, and not really succeeding.
