Created in Germany before the Berlin-born animation pioneer fled to escape the Nazis, Papageno is one of Lotte Reiniger’s opera-based shorts, matching the magic of Mozart to the sensory shadow play of the silhouette film. Renoir once described her work as the “visual expression of Mozart’s music.”
