The Baylands Nature Preserve can be best enjoyed from within the car, with the windows tightly closed, and without staying very long. Is there a sewage treatment next to it, or does it just smell like that? Honestly, we made the mistake of getting out of the car, and taking a few steps, before lunging back in. The masks were no help. Then we opened the windows as soon as we were far enough away. We did see plenty of ducks and gulls, and a few we think were snowy egrets. Just beautiful.

This and nearby Shoreline Park are the most accessible and best birding on SF Bay. Thousands of shore and water birds rest here from August through May.

Lovely space, especially the Duck Pond area. Great walking trails and photo opportunities especially if you are a bird lover. Parking was open but likely due to the fact that I went on a very cold day (for the Bay Area). ;)

Close to Google and other Silicon Valley icons. Easy drive from Menlo Park with parking by the Duck Pond or by the cafe. Several easy flat walks right out to on the salt marsh or by the bayside. Watch the executive planes come and go from the small landing sites or switch the varied birdlife. We've seen hummingbirds, egrets, burrowing owls and golden orioles throughout the seasons. Take binoculars and camera. It's very peaceful with views across the Bay.

There are several trails on which to take a walk but some most of them come pretty close to roads or the 101. If you are in the city and just want to take an outdoor walk, worth stopping but not worth a special visit.

I am a bird guide in Portland Oregon so when we visited the area we had to check out what the web said was an amazing area for waterfowl. The web was right! I saw large numbers of ducks, raptors, shorebirds, wading birds and song birds. Also Pelicans and Grebes and a Bald Eagle. Very lovely trails, flat, lots of habitat. You could spend hours here. The only down side is that if you don't have a car , good luck getting a taxi to take you back to your hotel. We had pre arranged one and still we had to wait about a half hour and they had trouble finding it even though it is very clearly marked..
I saw 50 birds in two hour walk, lovely...

The baylands preserve building is for school kids and not worth that much of a trip. The sailing platform doesn't give you much places to walk, the duck pond smells like duck guano, but all that is mitigated by the great views to the east of the bay. Now, wildlife restoration is bringing back the birds ( more so in Byxbee park slightly to the south ).

You would never suspect that you were so close to millions of people while you are spending time at the Palo Alto Baylands. This beautiful meeting of land and water is home to lots of wildlife and teeming with birds. There are now new trails so you can walk as little of as much as you might like.

This beautiful Nature reserve gives you the opportunity to experience the wilderness closest to Palo Alto . The golden rolling grass fields , the lake and the trails provides the chance to be in the midst of nature while still being in city of the Silicon Valley . Good place for families with kids - there are water birds , people to enjoy walking , trekking in this park or simply breath in the beauty of the nature here . The entree is strict .

While sections are paved, most are pebbly and make it rough for thin wheels, bikes ok. The entrance at shoreline has great trails and is part of the Baylands!
