Sunderland plot Paik Seung-ho move after offer rejected – sources

Sunderland are plotting a new move for Birmingham City star Paik Seung-ho this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Seung-ho, 27, moved to St Andrew’s in January on a two-and-a-half-year deal after a three-year spell at K-League side Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

It is believed that the Black Cats pursued the South Korea international’s signature last winter and held talks with Seung-ho over a potential deal, but he opted for a move to Birmingham City.

However, well-placed sources have told Football Insider that Sunderland are still very keen to sign the midfielder and are readying a fresh pursuit.

Sunderland revive interest in Birmingham star Paik Seung-ho

He has been a regular for the Blues since his arrival, having started 13 out of the 16 games he has been available for in the Championship, including all of their last nine clashes.

The defensive midfielder is a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy and made two appearances for their B team.

Having failed to break into the La Liga giants’ senior side, he has had spells across Europe at clubs including Girona, Darmstadt and Peralada.

He has earned 15 senior appearances for South Korea and bagged his nation’s only goal in their 4-1 defeat against Brazil in the last-16 of the 2022 World Cup.

Seung-ho has predominantly played as a defensive midfielder at Birmingham this season but has been fielded as a central and attacking midfielder across his career.

Sunderland sit 13th in the Championship table after their 1-0 defeat against Millwall on Saturday afternoon (20 April).

They are next in action against 15th-place Watford on Saturday afternoon (27 April) in their penultimate game of the season.
