      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Overboard makes poor use of the ever-charming Anna Faris -- and chooses questionable source material -- to offer a remake that fails to clear the fairly low bar set by the original.

Jeff M I suppose if you want to be optimistic, you can always say a bad remake will lead you to appreciate the original that much more! The first OVERBOARD won't be remembered as one of cinema's great comedies, but it was amiable, a lot of fun and had a wonderful rapport between Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. This needless remake, which often lifts dialogue word for word from the original, is pretty much dead in the water. The biggest problem by far is that Derbez and Faris have zero chemistry. And it doesn't help matters that he looks old enough to be her father. Derbez is downright horrible in the first act and gradually works up to adequate by the end. Faris starts out well but peters out by the end. And when these two share scenes together, well, I've seen nuns with more sexual chemistry. A slight change in the climax from the original movie is catastrophic and lessens what impact the end of the movie could have had. We wanted Kurt and Goldie to end up together in the first movie. Sadly, the same can't be said for Eugenio and Anna. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/28/23 Full Review Cali C A short film featuring A dog crapping on a copy of the original movie script would have been way more entertaining. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/19/23 Full Review Ava V This was an awesome movie! Definitely watch Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/20/23 Full Review Veronique v I don't know why this movie scored so poorly! After watching the Valet, which I loved, I really wanted to see another Eugenio Derbez movie and this one did not disappoint! Yet again, he plays a very heartwarming character, and his character Leo goes through a lot of character development. The movie is not as predictable as most romcoms are nowadays, and I truly love the mixture of Spanish and English without it being too much. If you are having a movienight with yhe family I would definitely recommend this movie, it is truly better than most nowadays! Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review Comedy is very binary. People are either laughing or their not... If you're in a room where a comedy is playing and nobody is laughing you can hear the lack of space. Aug 28, 2018 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) The relationship prospects are about as seaworthy as the Titanic. Rated: 1/5 Jun 25, 2018 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) To make matters worse, the chemistry between Faris and Derbez is non-existent and makes you yearn, in a way you never thought possible, for the glory days of Hawn and Russell. Rated: 2/5 Jun 22, 2018 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy A toothless comedy, although the stars certainly do their best to lift the material. Rated: 2/4 Jun 7, 2021 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a thoroughly middle-of-the-road endeavor that's rarely, if ever, able to entirely justify its very existence. Rated: 2/4 Jun 3, 2021 Full Review Andrew Gaudion THN You'll find yourself cringing at some of the attempts at gags, with some moments really only evoking a pity laughs as the film moves towards its predictable finale.
