Purchase options and add-ons
"Readers can find comfort in the dedication V.I. gives the cries for help she hears from friends, neighbors, and strangers... Very few series authors deliver as masterfully as Sara Paretsky.” — San Francisco Book Review
Legendary detective V.I. Warshawski uncovers a nefarious conspiracy preying on Chicago’s weak and vulnerable, in this thrilling novel from New York Times bestseller Sara Paretsky
On her way home from an all-night surveillance job, V.I. Warshawski’s dogs lead her on a mad chase that ends when they discover a badly injured teen hiding in the rocks along Lake Michigan. The girl only regains consciousness long enough to utter one enigmatic word. V.I. helps bring her to a hospital, but not long after, she vanishes before anyone can discover her identity. As V.I. attempts to find her, the detective uncovers an ugly consortium of Chicago powerbrokers and mobsters who are prepared to kill the girl. And now V.I.’s own life is in jeopardy as well.
Told against the backdrop of a city emerging from its pandemic lockdown, Overboard lays bare the dark secrets and corruption buried in Chicago’s neighborhoods in a masterly fashion.

"[A] compelling, fast-paced and original mystery.” — BookPage on Overboard
Propulsive.... The tale’s relentless pacing, sky-high stakes, and strong social justice advocacy should keep readers invested in the expertly crafted characters’ fates. Series fans will get their money’s worth.” — Publishers Weekly on Overboard
“Not just murder, but adultery, hate crime, fraud, elder abuse, police misconduct, and dysfunctional families. Enjoy.” — Kirkus Reviews on Overboard
“Intricate and involving.… Overboard offers the comfort of a throwback, enlisting classic PI-story motifs, such as disguises, heartless villains, escapes on foot and feats of physical daring. Would it even be a Warshawski novel without that last one?” — Shelf Awareness
"In pursuit of the truth about rapacious developers, skeevy nursing home operators and corrupt cops, Vic ends up in a lot of places she doesn’t want to be.... How is it all connected? With Warshawski on the case, finding out is a dark ride." — Tampa Bay Times on Overboard
“The new VI Warshawski novel is a worthy addition to one of crime fiction’s long-standing gems.... Paretsky paints a vivid picture of a city slowly working through the traumas of the pandemic and a woman still very much in imminent danger.” — Crime Reads on Overboard
"Readers can find comfort in the dedication V.I. gives the cries for help she hears from friends, neighbors, and strangers... Very few series authors deliver as masterfully as Sara Paretsky.” — San Francisco Book Review on Overboard

"[A] series bar-raiser . . . A high point in Paretsky’s long-running and much-loved series." — Booklist (starred review) on Dead Land

About the author
Called a "genius" by Lee Child and "one of the all time greats" by Karin Slaughter, Sara Paretsky transformed the role of women in the mystery world with her detective, V.I. Warshawski. V.I. is tough, feminine and vulnerable, but above all loyal to her friends and clients. Paretsky and Warshawski share a love of singing, Golden Retrievers and Italian reds. V.I. has escaped many near-death experiences, including drowning in Chicago's swamps (Blood Shot), falling down an elevator shaft (Burn Marks), and multiple attempts to shoot her down (Dead Land). Paretsky would have retired to the Umbrian Hills after one such event, but V.I. keeps coming back for more.
Paretsky's passion for social justice is reflected in her novels but also in her support for reproductive health and the welfare of women and children. She founded Sisters in Crime, an international organization that advocates for women in the mystery/thriller field. She is one of four living writers to earn both the Cartier Diamond Dagger from the British Crime Writers and Grand Master from the Mystery Writers of America.

But, a new Warshawski book is always a treat.
Wish I had a sheet of notes about the characters to help me keep them straight.

This book is set during the COVID era, and the author likes to keep reminding us of the danger VI is in when people get in her face when not wearing masks, or manhandling her. But here’s the thing, if she had wanted to make a statement about this pandemic, why not allow one of the minor characters who are all in their late 80s or 90s (and still running hospitals and being doctors) to have died.
Here me out here, Lotty, Max and Mr Contreras use to be viable support characters, used as sounding boards and the voice of reason. Over the last few books, Lotty just grimaces and tells VI off, Max pats Lotty hand, and Mr Contreras is used to dump kids on while VI goes off to save the day for them. These three have become caricatures now. And completely unbelievable given their ages. And is this where we should also mention the two dogs who seem to have been alive 25 years now?
I feel it’s time for me to retire from this series. In the end they feel like 400 pages of ever increasing threads, solved at the last minute with a shoot out, but with a reminder that these are big businesses as the baddie so will get away with it.
makes her characters very genuine.
Recommend all of her books.
