Synopsis
A WOMAN OF MAGIC...LOVED BY ALL MEN...EXCEPT THE ONLY MAN IN THE WORLD SHE WANTED.
A woman's dubious past proves to be a stumbling block when she becomes engaged to marry.
1934 Directed by Robert Z. Leonard
A woman's dubious past proves to be a stumbling block when she becomes engaged to marry.
The talkie version of A Woman of Affairs.
But without Garbo.
Or anything else making it worthwhile.
Not even the great Mrs. Patrick Campbell (whose participation made me add to it my watchlist in the first place) can save it.
Snooty/talky/snoozy melodrama with non-stop chatter, ball gowns and bow ties. Rich lass Constance Bennett tries to find love amid a squad of pencil moustaches, brandy and tears.
Attuned to the melodrama of her life, Constance Bennett’s performance is a rare and solemn gesture of a heart breaking as a woman gradually acknowledges the structurally enforced limitations of her time.
for not seeing her in many serious roles i was surprised for how well constance did in this but the melodrama of this is on a WHOLE NOTHER LEVEL
Go with Greta Garbo's silent classic A Woman of Affairs (1928) instead of this Hays Code adjusted sound remake. Constance Bennett is fine, but this becomes just sentimental drivel which leaves more a bad taste then feeling one has experienced a quality story. Ends so ridiculous that it becomes almost an insult.
