The Honourable Sir Oliver Mowat

8th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario
November 18, 1897 to April 19, 1903

​Oliver Mowat was born in 1820 in Kingston. He was called to the bar in 1841, and served as a MPP from 1857 to 1896. He held the posts of Provincial Secretary, Postmaster General and Premier (1872-1896). He was knighted in 1892, and upon his retirement from the legislature, served as a Senator from 1896 to 1897. Mowat was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in 1897, and died in office in 1903. A devout Christian, Mowat was the author of several religious books and served as an executive in a variety of religious organizations.​​
