Biography

  • One third of the rap group Diamond District and former member of the Low Budget crew, Oddisee is the stage name of American rapper and producer Amir Mohamed el Khalifa, hailing from Washington, D.C., U.S.

Influenced by the soul and rap of his relative’s music collections growing up, Oddisee made his first mark on the music industry as an underground producer. Having intended to study visual arts at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Khalifa soon altered his life plan and began crafting beats and melodies. The fruit of this initial effort can be seen on the track “Musik Lounge” which found its way on to DJ Jazzy Jeff’s 2002 record “Magnificent”. The producer went on to join the Low Budget crew alongside MCs and producers Kenn Starr, Cy Young, and Kev Brown. Reluctant to rest on his production laurels, Oddisee made his rapping debut on the album “Foot in the Door”, mixed by Jazzy Jeff in 2006.

The rapper and producer subsequently contributed to songs by SoulStice, Marco Polo, and J-Live before issuing his sophomore album “101” in 2008. The full-lengths “Mental Liberation”, “New Money”, and “In the Ruff” followed in 2009, during which time Oddisee began his series of Odd-season mixtapes beginning with “Odd Summer”. The rapper’s 2010 studio album “Travelling Man” marked his arrival at Mello Music Group, who also issued Oddisee’s 2012 album “People Hear What They See”. The album earned strong reviews from the critical press, who highlighted Oddisee’s introspective songwriting approach combined with orchestrated soul accompaniment. The album “The Beauty in All” and “Tangible Dream” arrived in 2013, followed by the 2014 album “March on Washington” as a part of Diamond District. With lyrics providing a sound social commentary of the current climate and infectious beats inviting movement, Oddisse released his 11th studio album “The Good Fight” in 2015.

Live reviews

  • Oddisee

It's been awhile since I visited the Echo, a rare all-ages venue. You never know what you're gonna get with this crowd in Echo Park. I spent a lot of time trying not to spend all my cash at the bar, and had a couple conversations with locals who had just barely discovered Sales, and were excited to hear Oddisee was playing. This show was announced pretty last minute since a local festival they were booked to play was cancelled.

It seemed like somewhat different crowds arrived for Sales and Oddisee, but the positive message and deep grooves of both acts really made for a seamless feature. There were some minor hiccups with the sound for both artists, but for the most part it sounded clean.

Oddisee's performance truly stands out in a sea of lazy modern rap - he really is unafraid to put his inner thoughts and hopes to pen in a compelling, creative way. Oddisee is a class act - fun, dynamic, spontaneous, and meaningful in his content.

If you haven't had the chance to see him with Good Company, you especially owe it to yourself. The personality and sonic quality of this band is fantastic - incredible syncopation, backing vocals, deep bass and use of synths, and the ability to suck you into a jam and forget that you came to hear an emcee altogether.

All in all, I enjoyed this show a lot - and am glad I held out for the great eats down the street afterward, too.

  • Amir Mohamed el Khalifa, better known by his stage name Oddisee is one of the worst effortlessly cool producers and artists to appear on the US circuit in quite some time. Affiliated with both Low Budget Crew and Diamond District he is no stranger to the stage yet his headline tours allow him true creative control.

There are no unnecessary production techniques used this evening, instead Oddisee stands confidently and delivers his personal take on hip hop. Lifting tracks from studio albums, mixtapes and EPs it is an evening of variation yet Amir's skilled flow pulls all the parts together and offers consistency. He keeps the fans in mind throughout the night thanking them as they attempt to rap along during the more well known singles and thanking for the huge applauses he receives at the closure of every track. An intriguing artist yet one who has an immeasurable potential is definitely worth investigating further.

  • Let me just start with WOW!! Oddisee is an incredibly talented musician/lyricist, so I knew it would be a fun & memorable show but, this being my first time seeing him live, I was very impressed with what a great performance he put on. He was on point the whole show. Never slipped. Never stuttered. Had clear & strong command of his vocals & the crowd. I'd say he played all my favorite tracks but most of his tracks are my favorite.

It was also rad seeing him work the merch table & giving love after the show. Mad respect to him for that.

All positive vibes & great show.

  • It was at the Rivoli in support of the release of 'The Good Fight'. He played old faves too like 'Ready to Rock' (on People hear what they see) and 'Yeah & Nah' (on Tangible Dream). The latter, already a phenomenal track, shines on stage. It's Oddisee so the crowd is mature and deeply appreciates hip-hop. But Oddisee doesn't just cruise through his set. Like he should, because MC stands for move the crowd, he gets the crowd to participate: clap, call and response, etc. All in all, he puts on a show. I left thinking 'that's the hip-hop I fell in love with'. Go see him.

  • Oddisee and The Good Compny make sure that your experience is unforgettable and REALLY know how to put on a good show. Every single person on the stage was so talented and had no hesitation showing how much they were enjoying the experience playing for us in San Francisco. I would see these guys again in a heartbeat if they came back to the Bay Area (please come back!!!).

  • Show was amazing. Oddisee was out in the museum talking to the crowd before the show, he took some pictures with me and my friend and let us know about another upcoming show. If you are an Oddisee fan and haven't seen him live I will promise you that you are definitely missing out big time. I'll be at his next show for sure.

  • This artist is mad amazing! I've seen so much rap artist in my life but this one is special, he potentiates hip hop at maximum with his band: drums, mpc singers, guitarists... And obviously his skill freestyling, rapping and syncronizing to the beats. Highly recommended. 10/10

  • Nothing short of epic. Not much of an encore, but he brought the house down nonetheless. Hands down the best MC to ever represent the DMV. Also, the conscious commentary was well timed, brief, and perfectly worded. Oddisee did his thing; simple as that.
