Review
Jane Goodall, Ph.D., CBE Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace Angelina is living proof of the power we all have -- every one of us -- to make a difference. I was deeply moved by her descriptions of individual refugees struggling to live with dignity and hope, and found her personal commitment to be an inspiration. Angelina's journals document her awakening as a humanitarian activist and I hope they will move readers to act. I look forward to my continued work with Angelina on behalf of the United Nations.

Introduction
I was asked to write an introduction to my journals, to explain how my journals came to be, why my life took this direction, and why I decided to start it.
As I try to find the answers, I am sure of one thing: I am forever changed. I am so grateful I took this path in my life, thankful that I met these amazing people and had this incredible experience.
I honestly believe that if we were all aware, we would all be compelled to act.
So the question is not how or why I would do this with my life. The question is, how could I not?
Many nights I sat awake reading stories and statistics about national and international tragedies.
I read about UNHCR:
More than twenty million refugees exist today.
One-sixth of the world's population lives on less than one dollar a day.
1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water.
One-third of the world has no electricity.
More than 100 million children are out of school.
One in six children in Africa dies before the age of five.
I read about different organizations that do humanitarian work. I had been reading about Sierra Leone when I was in England. When I got back to the States it was difficult to follow the stories, so I called USA for UNHCR and asked if they could help me understand the situation there and similar situations elsewhere in the world. Three weeks later I was in Sierra Leone.
I don't know how this will be as a book, how readers will find it. I am not a writer. These are just my journals. They are just a glimpse into a world that I am just beginning to understand, a world I could never really explain in words.

A raw account of Angelina's visits with Refugees around the world. Simple use of language and an easy read even for those who have never studied humanitarian aid. You are living in her head throughout her experiences. Despite her fame she is humble, respectful, and eager to learn. I love that we can read about her early experiences in the field because to date she has made such a huge impact working as a Goodwill Ambassador with the UN. She has been on over 40 field missions and in this book you get to experience her very first trip to Africa. I loved every part of this memoir. Why read a fiction novel when you can learn something important? Highly recommend for anyone.

A heart wrenching coming of age tale that puts 1st world problems in perspective, from the viewpoint of a young woman who was adorably sheltered. Some moments were still ghastly even for the old and hardened (me). The book sent me down a rabbit hole of investigating UN accountability measures in which I was left with disappointment. Apparently countries can maintain their membership without following international law, so that's awesome. If you want to get really angry at the state of international politics and how it affects real people then 5 stars... Highly recommend.

Thought provoking as it challenges the reader to self reflect on international issues, how we view life, how we handle problems, and how we can help those in need - at home and overseas.

Between February 2001 and June 2002, the American actress Angelina Jolie undertook four missions leading her to Africa (Sierra Leone and Tanzania), Cambodia, Pakistan, and Ecuador. She had asked UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) to help her learn more about the situation of refugees worldwide in order to help and raise awareness of their difficulties. "Notes From My Travels" are the journals Jolie kept during those journeys. Written straight from the heart, the memoirs are both informative and touching. Just as Jolie herself, the reader learns about the conditions refugees in the above mentioned countries have to deal with. It isn't just facts though -- Jolie describes the refugees as the amazing human beings they really are. The reader will feel inspired to see how much people can achieve when given a chance. Jolie also tells about the hard work of the staff members of UNHCR. A few black and white photos in the middle of the book illustrate Jolie's descriptions, showing the actress, staff members, and refugees.
"Politics aside, on a human level we should all be reminded of what is important and how we are truly equal" (p 6). This appeal will stay with the reader, as Jolie succeeds in conveying that there is not just an anonymous mass of refugees to tend to, but that each and every human being should be treated like the precious individual she or he is. Her visiting the refugees has forever changed Jolie's worldview: "I am so grateful I took this path in my life, thankful that I met these amazing people and had this incredible experience" (p XI). The journals show Jolie's caring personality, allowing a glimpse into the actress' soul. Among the refugees she wasn't the Hollywood actress -- she was simply Angie, a sympathetic and warm-hearted woman with the honest wish to help and make a difference. Her appointment to Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR in August 2001 is very much deserved, as Jolie not only undertakes field visits and makes generous donations (including all of her proceeds from the book) but also really cares about people.

Reaching towards the end, sadness takes over as I did not want the journey of the true meaning of humanity to end. It was the only window to learn more about innocents' lives. Every day passes by, my appreciation and gratitude intensifies to UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie who managed to educate us.
Notes from My Travels, nourishes the soul and directs one's energy to the humanitarian issues exposed in this book. 20 million refugees around the world, some of us are simply not aware of the issue, and some are just selfish enough to ignore. Thanks to Angelina Jolie for raising awareness among both groups of people.
It is inspiring, educating and motivating; it will enlighten the mind of any individual who reads it. It is a blessing for us to know how other people are living and what their needs are so we can all contribute in building a better world.
It is about time we get over our selfishness and read about our innocent brothers and sisters and take action.
While I was reading, a friend who does not speak English asked me about the book, so I briefed her. Without hesitating, modestly her next question was "where can I find it in our language?" Then I realized how Angelina Jolie managed to raise enough awareness even to those who could not read the book as well.
It is such a Treasure. Don't hesitate to read it; Notes from My Travels are pure facts from a big heart.

In this written account of Angelina Jolie's early trips with the UNHCR, readers are given a first-hand glimpse at the strength and beauty of refugees from around the world. Jolie holds nothing back, writing with emotion, intelligence, and incredible insight as she describes the people whose suffering inspired her to become a UN Ambassador and donate more than $6 million -- as well as adopt a child,(...) from Cambodia. It is a must-read for Jolie fans as well as anyone who wishes to be more aware of the living conditions of third-world countries. Jolie eats and lives with these people, forgoing all Hollywood luxuries but at the same time knowing that she is barely making any sacrifices compared to how refugees must live on a daily basis. We literally watch as these courageous and inspiring people win her heart... and it's difficult to finish this book without being won over ourselves. One of the most beautiful women in the world describes the world's ugliest crimes against humanity and does so in a way that moves her readers to action. Her two goals are to better understand and to help bring awareness, and by the end she has more than met them.

A Wonderful Example of Noblesse Oblige
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 12, 2015Verified Purchase
I admit that Angelina Jolie being one of my favourite actors, and the fact that I also help some of the world's most vulnerable people, influenced my decision to buy this book, so I suspect there was always going to be a favourable bias. That said, I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that despite her claims to the contrary, Ms Jolie's writing is actually very good, in that it comes from the heart, and conveys very well, not only the terrible situations in which refugees find themselves but also Ms Jolie's emotional journey when learning about the people she's chosen to serve.
There were many times when her words moved me to tears, particularly in relation to countries I've also been to, and seen first-hand some of the situations she writes about (e.g. Cambodia). After I finished this book, I immediately visited the UNHCR website to read more of her field notes. I now have an even greater respect for Ms Jolie, and find I am far more interested in her work as a UN Goodwill Ambassador and Special Envoy, than I am in her 'day job'!
Angelina Jolie is truly one of the world's good guys, not just because of her work for the United Nations but because of *all* the causes she helps, and because, quite simply, she not only cares but cares enough to take action. She is a wonderful example of Noblesse Oblige - of someone using their privilege to help others - and I hope that through this book, and her work, she inspires others to follow suit.

Dankbarkeit
Reviewed in Germany on March 13, 2010Verified Purchase

Fascinating and a worthwhile read
Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2005Verified Purchase
While I've always felt Angelia Jolie was a superb actress, I wondered how much of her U.N. work was due to being a publicity hound. I came across this book in a store full of African crafts and was so fascinated with it that I came home and ordered it on Amazon. This book isn't a formally written account of her travels; rather, it's a collection of her writings in a personal journal written while on various U.N. missions around the world a couple of years ago. Her writing is casual, personal, and it is very raw and honest, obviously from the heart. I now have a new admiration for Angelina and her complete dedication to this cause. As a person who lived abroad for many years and traveled extensively in the third world and Africa, I was able to relate to to the accuracy of what she noted in her comments. I found the book interesting because it was an actual blow by blow journal of her experiences, impressions, observations, and her own reactions to what she saw on various trips. Very refreshing, and also very sobering at the same time. It's well worth a read for the content alone, and reading it will make you see Angelina in a totally different light. I now count myself among her admirers and I respect her intense involvement with the U.N. She is doing just as much to draw attention to these problems as did the late, wonderful Audrey Hepburn when she served in the same capacity in the U.N., and this is quite a compliment because Audrey was so truly wonderful in her own right. Angelina is a worthy successor, no doubt about it.
