I'm so impressed by the things that people can do to each other, and how the survivors of this hatred and spite keep on with their lives after such harsh and traumatic experiences stay tattooed on their souls. By the end of the book I couldn't stop asking myself the same thing that Angelina asked herself all along: how do they survive at all!

Angelina starts her journal by saying that she's not different from other people, but she wants to help. To me that alone makes her different. Not everyone cares about other fellow beings. She's different in so many ways and she makes a difference with all her humanitarian work.

I can understand why the UNHCR agency has such high rates of suicide and depression. Reading books about other countries who live in permanent terror like the ones she describes always depresses me, even though I'm thousands of miles away culturally and physically, and safe behind the soft pages of the book. I can't imagine the emotional scars that all those persons are left with when they are lucky enough to keep their lives. Anonymous to the rest of the world and yet still very valuable lives. Dead just seems such a high price to pay for respect and integrity. I can't imagine where they gather the strength to keep smiling.

It would be easier, less risky and less emotionally demanding to just send funds from the comfort of her home, and yet she is willing to share with all these people her time helping out in whatever ways she can. And that's why it's so admirable what she does. It's easy to mourn the dead, but it's hard to help the living. To all those refugees she is just some woman who wants to help. A remarkable woman with noble feelings. She masters beautiful gestures that make people feel good and loved and recognized and valued, and that alone can be more important than having a lot of other things that seem necessary and are necessary for all of them, but not any more so than the grace and beauty of a person whose mere existence makes it possible for them to keep their hopes up.

As I read once, you can train thousands or millions of political theorists and economists and theologians and bureaucrats, but charm and charisma, and the desire to put celebrity to good use: hundreds of years of training can't teach that or invent it. And Angelina has what it takes to make all this happen. I can't help those people because I don't have the economic resources to do so. But I'm grateful that there are people like her out there who are willing to share what they have, and to sacrifice some of her own comfort to help out. It's a good read if you want to sensitize yourself about some world issues.

Fascinating and a worthwhile read

While I've always felt Angelia Jolie was a superb actress, I wondered how much of her U.N. work was due to being a publicity hound. I came across this book in a store full of African crafts and was so fascinated with it that I came home and ordered it on Amazon. This book isn't a formally written account of her travels; rather, it's a collection of her writings in a personal journal written while on various U.N. missions around the world a couple of years ago. Her writing is casual, personal, and it is very raw and honest, obviously from the heart. I now have a new admiration for Angelina and her complete dedication to this cause. As a person who lived abroad for many years and traveled extensively in the third world and Africa, I was able to relate to to the accuracy of what she noted in her comments. I found the book interesting because it was an actual blow by blow journal of her experiences, impressions, observations, and her own reactions to what she saw on various trips. Very refreshing, and also very sobering at the same time. It's well worth a read for the content alone, and reading it will make you see Angelina in a totally different light. I now count myself among her admirers and I respect her intense involvement with the U.N. She is doing just as much to draw attention to these problems as did the late, wonderful Audrey Hepburn when she served in the same capacity in the U.N., and this is quite a compliment because Audrey was so truly wonderful in her own right. Angelina is a worthy successor, no doubt about it.

At first when you pick up this book, it is hard to imagine that it might be anything worthwhile. After all, it is written by an actress who could not possibly understand the hardships and struggles of people worlds away. This is quickly disproved by Jolie's book.Her raw accounts of everything she saw tugs at the heart strings and paints the pictures of the lives of people's living in the worst humanitarian conditions. Her love and heartbreak and present on every page, and her willingness to learn and help is something that we can all learn from. Jolie's book allows stories that may not otherwise be heard to see the light of day. A book that everyone should read because it teaches that one person can make a difference and that our problems are really not as big as we might like to think. I strongly recommend this book. She has seen for us a world miles away that needs our help, and reading this is the first step to realizing that something must and can be done.

The sad true stories of the world

Her writting is straighforward and does try to tell the tales mildly. She describes the truth. The true stories of the victims of many conflicts.

It is quite wonderful to be able to see these events through her eyes, eyes that are not trained to understand them, but to feel them, just like our own eyes.

Some stories might make you feel sick and to wonder how men could possibly do this, but they also show us the will of amazing people who have been through many unfortunate events and still have the will to live on.

This book will help you understand some conflicts that happen in our world and will also make you grateful for what you have in your life, as most people in the stories have nothing at all.

Everyone should read it.

A Wonderful Example of Noblesse Oblige

I admit that Angelina Jolie being one of my favourite actors, and the fact that I also help some of the world's most vulnerable people, influenced my decision to buy this book, so I suspect there was always going to be a favourable bias. That said, I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that despite her claims to the contrary, Ms Jolie's writing is actually very good, in that it comes from the heart, and conveys very well, not only the terrible situations in which refugees find themselves but also Ms Jolie's emotional journey when learning about the people she's chosen to serve.

There were many times when her words moved me to tears, particularly in relation to countries I've also been to, and seen first-hand some of the situations she writes about (e.g. Cambodia). After I finished this book, I immediately visited the UNHCR website to read more of her field notes. I now have an even greater respect for Ms Jolie, and find I am far more interested in her work as a UN Goodwill Ambassador and Special Envoy, than I am in her 'day job'!

Angelina Jolie is truly one of the world's good guys, not just because of her work for the United Nations but because of *all* the causes she helps, and because, quite simply, she not only cares but cares enough to take action. She is a wonderful example of Noblesse Oblige - of someone using their privilege to help others - and I hope that through this book, and her work, she inspires others to follow suit.

A raw account of Angelina's visits with Refugees around the world. Simple use of language and an easy read even for those who have never studied humanitarian aid. You are living in her head throughout her experiences. Despite her fame she is humble, respectful, and eager to learn. I love that we can read about her early experiences in the field because to date she has made such a huge impact working as a Goodwill Ambassador with the UN. She has been on over 40 field missions and in this book you get to experience her very first trip to Africa. I loved every part of this memoir. Why read a fiction novel when you can learn something important? Highly recommend for anyone.

A heart wrenching coming of age tale that puts 1st world problems in perspective, from the viewpoint of a young woman who was adorably sheltered. Some moments were still ghastly even for the old and hardened (me). The book sent me down a rabbit hole of investigating UN accountability measures in which I was left with disappointment. Apparently countries can maintain their membership without following international law, so that's awesome. If you want to get really angry at the state of international politics and how it affects real people then 5 stars... Highly recommend.
