At present, the unpredictability of the film business and box office is at a whole new level. While a few Bollywood films post pandemic like Sooryavanshi, Gangubai Kathiawadi, The Kashmir Files and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 have proved to be hits or blockbusters, the rest of the films like Bachchhan Paandey, Jersey, Heropanti 2, Runway 34, Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Dhaakad, Anek, etc. have flopped miserably. Several of these films have not gotten even a respectable opening, forget a respectable lifetime. While a few experts believe that it’s a phase and things will get better like the pre-pandemic days, many predict that this is the new normal and that we need to adjust to it.

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Mukesh Bhatt a few days back on his 69th birthday. When asked what has gone wrong, according to him, with Bollywood films at present, the accomplished producer said, “The narrative must change. Due to the pandemic, the OTT has come to the forefront. Audiences are now aware of good kinds of content. You can’t provide them with content that was being given to them before the pandemic. We are done with that kind of narrative. We have to change with time. The generation is changing and if you don’t change, you’ll be left behind. What’s happening in Bollywood right now is that people are making setups, not films. Setups don’t work, films work.”

Does Mukesh Bhatt mean to say that filmmakers are giving a lot more importance to recovery options more than the script? “Exactly,” replied Mukesh Bhatt and added, “Nobody is making a movie anymore. They are all trading. Itne mein bana lo, itne mein becho aur itna paisa andar karo. It’s a con game happening. We used to never do that. We’ll be like ‘Kahani excite karti hai. Toh chalo banate hai’! That imaandari is gone.”
