Absolutely skip New Braunfels and go to Gruene.
This town has lost its character with far too many people and cars. It's simply impossible to get around. Shopping is almost completely dominated by commercial big box stores and fast food. After living here for a decade some years ago this will be the last time I visit when it is not Wurstfest. Even Landa park is strange now with the abundance of people. More of a People Zoo than a park.
Gruene has great music and local flavor and food. Also, a pleasant gateway city to visit the hill country and the various towns which are fantastic.

A pleasant medium-size town with an attractive downtown. Some nice bakeries and restaurants downtown near the main roundabout. Other areas of town look grubby and run-down. Best attractions are on the edge of the town...Gruene, Natural Bridges and Canyon Lake. Important note to travelers: Most city streets are 30 mph...and the city rigorously enforces that rule even when that limit is not posted with a sign. We generally find other Hill Country towns like Fredericksburg, Boerne and Kerrville to be friendlier and slower paced.

We stayed in New Braunfels for a long weekend. Visited Guadalupe River State Park, Gruene, San Marcos, Driftwood and two of the New Braunfels city parks. Plenty of outdoor stuff to do here. Day trips in all directions as well.

Had a long weekend in California that didn't happen so here we came. Read so much about it so had to visit. So glad we did. From lodging (Comal Inn you HAVE to stay here) to dining to the rivers and local history, you cannot go wrong. So much to do within a 30 minute drive or less. Parking just about everywhere is free which is great. If you're torn between Fredericksburg and here, this is a no brainer. Sure, go up there for the wineries/wine trail, but make this your base. So much more charming.

Loved our relaxing trip here for a long weekend. Water was pretty and everything was nice and green. Would be better for floating the river if it had more rain recently (lots of low places for your tube to get stuck). But still enjoyable!

There’s a lot to do in New Braunfels TX!! But make sure to visit the Hill Country Craft Beer Fest. We have not missed one since visiting here . Typically, it’s held in the Spring. Adults , only . 21 & over. Great Music to go along with the crafted beer . If you don’t like beer , there’s also crafted alcoholic cider (my favorite). Friendly place, lots of space and organized parking. Fabulous eats too !! Looking forward to Spring 2023 event !

Nice downtown area with plenty of free parking.
Phoenix Saloon had a good atmosphere and (free) live music even during the week. We were fortunate enough to catch "BRIAN POUNDS" (formerly on "The Voice"). He was good and since it was an intimate crowd, he personalized it with the back-stories about the songs he was singing.
The "Pour Haus" was really lively with a mixed age crowd. Loved the outdoor atmosphere. Fun for adults of all ages. They had huge "jenga" blocks that could be played at your table, bean bag games, live music, etc.
"Naegelin's Bakery" is a MUST! Oldest Bakery in Texas (and easily the most delicious!). Husband ate a sausage kolaches
and thought it was wonderful. I ate a cherry turnover and loved every bite.
The "Sophienberg Museum" was one of the BEST museums of local history I've ever been to! The displays were absolutely wonderfully done, the videos were very good, etc. Would HIGHLY recommend visiting this museum!

The city has really grown since we were back in the 70's. It was a sleepy little town with a handful of restaurants, but it is now much larger and more active. The historic area is much more developed and there are a number of the historic buildings that have been repurposed and they look good.
The Courthouse is a very nice Richardson Romanesque that is well done--not as good as Waxahachie, but still a good one!
The Comal River goes through the city and it is pretty--also good for water activities.

I’m 67 and if I could go back in time and pick a place to live it would be New Braunfels, Texas. Now I go there as often as possible to visit our grandchildren and our lake house nearby.
It has everything a young, mature, single, married, family or solo person could want!
It is small town America in every respect and located between Austin and San Antonio and is nestled on the edge of the Texas Hill Country.
The air is clean the water pure and traffic flows. People are friendly to a fault and always willing to lend a hand.
There are many free entertainment options and wonderful food is all around. Plenty of recreational opportunities and very much family friendly.
The public schools are outstanding.
The cost of living is low and public utilities are reliable. When they say the cable guy is coming she actually shows up on time and is polite and able to get things done quickly.
To live there is wonderful to visit often is time very well spent.
The oldest dancehall in Texas is there under the water tower in the area known as Greune. Now that’s another part of town worth seeing and experiencing.

The town square has lots of neat little shops and restaurants to explore. Take the time to wander and you're sure to find a place to have a nice meal, get a good cold beer or pick up some antiques.

Where is a decent hotel with a pool near me

We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in New Braunfels...Great staff, nice pool and convenient to all the local attractions. The price was pretty reasonable as well. We found the food to be ...meh...so you might want to look elsewhere for that (lots of good alternatives nearby).

Can you advise where to stay and what you recommend doing. Not sure how long to. Stay. Thank you!

We stayed at the Marriot Courtyard on the Guadalope River and would highly recommend this hotel. As to activities in New Braunfels, the big attraction is the water park if that is your interest. Also Guerne is a quaint town with antique shops and restaurants.
