Actor Vidya Balan is all set to make her big-screen comeback with the upcoming murder-mystery film Neeyat, which reunites her with her Shakuntala Devi director Anu Menon. Vidya’s last theatrical release was 2019’s Mission Mangal. Since then, she has starred in the streaming releases Shakuntala Devi, Sherni, and Jalsa.

In Neeyat, she plays a detective named Mira Rao, who investigates a murder at a billionaire’s party in the Scottish countryside. When the billionaire Ashish Kapoor (Ram Kapoor) is murdered, the suspicion falls on his family and friends, each of whom is harboring their own secrets. The suspects are played by Rahul Bose, Shahana Goswami, Prajakta Koli, Neeraj Kabi, Shashank Arora and others. The trailer teases a story that seems similar to Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel And Then There Were None, which has been adapted for film and television several times before. But crucially, that story didn’t have a detective character at its centre.

Vidya’s Mira Rao shows up to investigate, and immediately begins interrogating the suspects. She finds that each of them had resentments against Ashish Kapoor, and had reasons to harm him.

The murder mystery genre has experienced a resurgence in recent years with the smash hit Murder Mystery, the Kenneth Branagh Hercule Poirot, and Knives Out movies. In India, however, the last major murder mystery was 2020’s Netflix release Raat Akeli Hai, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Before that, there was the Ittefaq remake, which was released in 2015. But the concept of locked room mysteries remains largely unexplored in Bollywood. But if Neeyat works, it could be the start of Vidya’s own franchise.

Festive offer

About her character, Vidya said in a statement, “In Neeyat, Mira Rao is not your classic, everyday detective, which is what made it fun for me. Also, not only did I get a chance to sink my teeth into an unusual and quirky character, but I also got to work with a powerful set of co-actors.”

Neeyat has been written by Anu Menon, Priya Venkataraman, Advaita Kala and Girvani Dhyani with dialogues by Kausar Munir. Neeyat is slated for a July 7 release in theatres, followed by a Prime Video release.
