David Jones Sr.

David Jones Sr. was once described by U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell as the most influential person in Louisville. Jones was the co-founder of Humana, one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States. He also founded Chrysalis Ventures, a venture capital firm based in Louisville.  Jones Sr. was a Kentucky lawyer who turned a $1,000 investment into America’s largest nursing-home chain, then transformed his business into a hospital giant and health insurance corporation Humana. He was raised in poverty on the west side of Louisville and grew up and took boxing even winning the Golden Gloves. He later took his boxing attitude of take-no-prisoners in business style becoming an immensely successful entrepreneur.  The businessman wielded power and generosity in equal measure and was both feared and revered as a compassionate advocate for the poor and a shrewd power broker who influenced local and state politics.

John Schnatter

Schnatter is the founder and former CEO of Papa John’s Pizza, a global pizza restaurant chain. He started the company in 1984 in the back of his father’s tavern in Jeffersonville, Indiana, which is just across the river from Louisville. Louisville is also the headquarters of Papa John’s Pizza, the company that Schnatter founded in 1984. While he did not grow up in Louisville, he has been closely associated with the city throughout his career. He has also been a major philanthropist in the Louisville community, donating millions of dollars to local causes and organizations. However, in 2018, he was embroiled in controversy after he used a racial slur during a conference call with company executives. His inability to control his tongue cost him his reputation, his seat on the University of Louisville board of trustees, removal of his nickname from Cardinal Stadium and his ‘Untouchable’ position in Papa Jones Pizza Chain, which he founded.

Lionel Hampton

Born in 1908, legendary jazz vibraphone player Lionel Hampton had humble beginnings in Louisville, KY. He began playing music at a young age and initially played the drums for the Chicago Defender, but later switched to the vibraphone, which became his signature instrument. In the 1920s and 1930s, Hampton played with several prominent jazz bands, including those led by Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson, and Benny Carter. Hampton had a long and successful career as a percussionist, pianist, bandleader and actor. Throughout his career, he performed with some of the most notable jazz musicians of the time including Louis Armstrong and Charlie ParkerHampton. Hampton won many awards and accolades including a Grammy in 2021-almost ten years after his death.

Nicole Scherzinger

Scherzinger went to elementary school and high school in Louisville. She won the Mirror Ball Trophy on Dancing with the Stars season 10 and has been a judge on The X Factor, both of which complement her solo music career. Nicole Scherzinger was exposed to gospel, R&B and pop music while she was growing up in Louisville. She worked on her singing and dancing skills at the Youth Performing Arts School, a magnet school for the arts. Nicole Scherzinger has never forgotten her roots in Louisville, despite her success in the entertainment industry. She visits the city from time to time and has admitted to enjoying the food, music and friendliness of the people in the city.

A native of Louisville, Bryson Djuan Tiller is an American singer and rapper. His debut single “Don’t” in 2015 peaked at number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Tiller’s music is often classified as R&B, hip-hop, and trap soul. In addition to “Don’t,” some of Tiller’s other popular songs include “Exchange,” “Sorry Not Sorry,” and “Run Me Dry.” In 2016, Tiller received the key to the city from Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. He won two BET Awards for Best New Artist and Best Male R&B/Pop Artist in the same year. Tiller released his second studio album True to Self. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 Chart in 2017. In 2020, Tiller released his third album, Anniversary, which includes features from artists such as Drake, Big Sean and Ty Dolla Sign.

Helen Humes

Helen Humes was an American singer who learned to play the trumpet and piano when she was young.  Also as a child, she sang with the local Sunday school band, which boasted future jazz stars such as Dicky Wells and Jonah Jones. In 1938 as a teenager, she became a singer with the Count Basie Orchestra replacing Billie Holiday. She toured Australia and performed at the Newport Jazz Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival. She also toured Europe with the first American Folk Blues Festival. Humes was one of the outstanding singers of her day.   Her light, clear voice retained a youthful sound into her 60s and it is even argued her late-period recordings were among the best she ever made. The Louisville-born Humes was given the key to the city of Louisville in 1975.

Louisville-born Jennifer Lawrence began her acting career in 2006 and gained recognition for her lead role in the independent drama Winter’s Bone in 2010, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Her films have grossed over $5.5* billion worldwide making her one of the most successful actresses of her generation.  Lawrence knew from an early age that she wanted to act and she began performing in school plays and local theatre in Louisville, Ky. At the age of 14 hoping to break into acting and modelling, she visited talent agencies with her mother in New York City where she was discovered. Her oscar win made her the first person born in the 1990s to have won it.

Ned Beatty

Beatty career spanned more than four decades with more than 150 movie and TV roles. Mr. Beatty was rarely the star who always left a lasting impression. Nicknamed “the busiest actor in Hollywood” Ned Beatty grew up fishing and working on farms. Beatty began his acting career at the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, VA and made his Broadway debut in 1963. He then transitioned to film, with his breakthrough role as Bobby Trippe coming in the 1972 film Deliverance. Ned Beatty was a familiar face on television as well where he played Stanley Bolander, the detective on the series Homicide: Life on the Street, from 1993 to 1995. He was also seen in several episodes of Roseanne and in episodes of Law & Order, and The Rockford Files among others.

Jennifer Carpenter

Jennifer Leann Carpenter is an American actress best known for playing Debra Morgan on the hit Showtime drama series Dexter, for which she won a Saturn Award in 2009. An actress of repute Carpenter first attracted critical attention for her performance in The Exorcism of Emily Rose. She took home the 2006 MTV Movie Award for Best Frightened Performance and also received a Hollywood Life Breakthrough Award. She was also named ‘Breakout Performer’ at the 2006 Scream Awards. The multitalented Carpenter also has a great set of vocals chords, she provided vocals for the songs Devil’s Playground and  It’s All Coming Back to Me Now on the “Dexter” soundtrack.

Muhammad Ali

“float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” Muhammad Ali started boxing when he was 12 years old. Among his titles are the Kentucky Golden Gloves, two national Golden Gloves and an AAU national title. Ali’s professional career spanned from 1960 to 1981 and saw him bring home three heavyweight from big showdowns. He was well-known for his cocky demeanour, quick wit and unconventional fighting style . The “Ali Shuffle” and “rope-a-dope” strategies that became his trademark. He refused to join the US army and fight in the Vietnam War for religious reasons and opposition to the war. Many people believe that Ali’s head injuries during his boxing career contributed to his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 1984.

Darrell Griffith

Darrell Steven Griffith, also known by his nickname Dr. Dunkenstein, is an American former basketball player who spent his entire professional career with the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association from 1980 to 1991. Griffith electrified crowds throughout his college and professional career. Born in Louisville, Ky. Griffith attended his hometown school of the University of Louisville. He holds the single-season scoring record with 825 points and remarkably is the only player in Louisville history to score more than 700 in a season. He was drafted by the Utah Jazz and led them to the Midwest Division title in 1983-84. Griffith has had his number “35” retired by both the Cardinals and the Jazz. The Dr.’s road jersey is on permanent display at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

Lisa Harrison

In 1989, Harrison was named the Naismith Prep Player of the Year and High School Player of the Year while attending Southern High School, by Parade Magazine. She also was named 1989’s Kentucky Miss Basketball. Harrison helped the University of Tennessee win the 1991 NCAA Tournament championship and went on to a long career in pro basketball before retiring in 2005. She was the third draft in the 1999 WNBA Draft and was selected by the Phoenix Mercury. In the WNBA, Lisa was once ranked eighth in free throw shooting accuracy at 86.4% in 2001. With her impressive athleticism, sharp shooting skills, and strategic game sense, Lisa has earned numerous accolades and awards throughout her career, including multiple MVP titles and championship victories.

Justin Thomas

Justin Louis Thomas is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour and is a former World Number One. In 2017, Thomas experienced a breakout year, winning five PGA Tour events and the FedEx Cup championship. He has won two major golf championships, winning the PGA Championship in 2017 and 2022.  He was born on April 29, 1993, in Louisville, Kentucky and comes from a family of golfers thus started playing the sport at a very young age. Thomas played college golf at the University of Alabama, where he placed first six times for the Crimson Tide. As a freshman in 2012, he won the Haskins Award as the most outstanding collegiate golfer. Thomas helped lead the University of Alabama to the national championship in 2013. He turned pro and was named the PGA Tour Player of the Year in 2017.  He is currently ranked No. 11* in the PGA world Rankings.

The Most Famous Louisvillian in Academia

St. Elmo Brady

Saint Elmo Brady was born in 1884, in Louisville, Kentucky. Brady received his bachelor’s degree from Fisk University and began teaching at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Saint Elmo Brady was a chemist and was the first African American to obtain a PhD in chemistry in the United States. Brady published three scholarly abstracts in Science in 1914-15 on his work with Professor Clarence Derick. He also collaborated with Professor George Beal on a paper published in the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry titled, “The Hydrochloride Method for the Determination of Alkaloids.”

Professor Brady also authored three monographs on Household Chemistry for Girls. Brady’s legacy was his establishment of strong undergraduate curricula, graduate programs, and fundraising development for four historically black colleges and universities.

Robert Alan “Bob” Edwards

Robert Alan “Bob” Edwards is an American broadcast journalist and a Peabody Award-winning member of the National Radio Hall of Fame. He National Public Radio’s flagship news programs, like the afternoon All Things Considered. He was the first and longest-serving host in the Morning Edition’s history. Starting in 2004, Edwards then was the host of The Bob Edwards Show on Sirius XM Radio and Bob Edwards Weekend distributed by Public Radio International to more than 150 public radio stations. Those programs ended in September 2015. Edwards currently hosts a podcast for AARP. This Louisville native had a career that has lasted more than 30 years, Bob Edwards has interviewed nearly 20,000 newsmakers. Bob Edwards was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2004.
