‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Ending Explained: Do John And Jane Survive?

Following

Amazon Prime Video released all eight episodes of Mr. and Mrs. Smith on Feb. 2, so if you’ve already reached the end of the binge-worthy series, you may have questions about John and Jane’s fate. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as John and Jane Smith, two spies who agree to an arranged marriage. The series is a reimagining of the 2005 action comedy film of the same name starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. However, the new Mr. & Mrs. Smith offers a few changes from the original. In the 2005 film, the assassins are a married couple unaware that their partner is a spy. But in Maya Erskine and Donald Glover’s version, they begin the series as strangers hired by a mysterious entity (they refer to as “Hihi”) to pose as a married couple and carry out a mission.

Over eight thrilling episodes, the TV series turns into a love story of sorts between the Smiths, with no shortage of action and killings, from bombs and knife fights to long chases. If you’ve made it to the end, then you know that the finale’s cryptic cliffhanger leaves more questions than answers.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Ending Explained

In the last hour of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, John and Jane are hunting each other down in the streets of NYC, attempting to “terminate” one another. This was after their boss, Hihi, told Jane to terminate John (and it’s assumed John likely received the same message). While it didn’t seem like the couple were going to kill one another, Jane is almost struck by bullets rushing through her window, unfortunately killing her cat Max. Similarly, John finds a bomb planted in his mother’s house.

Thanks to a truth serum that brings them back to their senses, they reveal that they didn’t try to kill each other earlier in the episode — which is when the house door opens and the Other Smiths (Wagner Moura and Parker Posey) enter. The high-risk assignment the other Smiths mentioned in Episode 4 was actually eliminating John and Jane — and that’s when the real fight begins.

During a shootout, the Other John was killed while our John was shot in the stomach. In the panic room, John’s bullet wound looks to be fatal, and Jane prepares to fight the Other Jane, waiting outside the door to finish them off. Before the final shootout, Jane reveals that she only has one bullet left, but the last scene shows three gun flashes from the window. It’s unknown whether the Smiths are alive — or if they managed to kill the Other Jane.

Will There Be a Season 2 of Mr. & Mrs. Smith?

Although Prime Video has yet to renew Mr. & Mrs. Smith for a second season, showrunner and co-creator Francesca Sloane is already thinking about Season 2.

“Definitely,” Sloane told The Hollywood Reporter about talks for Season 2. “It really depends on how everything is received. Of course, while you’re in the muck of making something this difficult, you really don’t even let yourself fantasize about the future. It just about trying to get to the end. But now that we’ve all done it, it’s sort of like childbirth. I love the baby!”

Sloane continued, “So, there are talks of season two and we have some really cool ideas for it — I’m collaborating with Donald and Taofik Kolade, who wrote on Atlanta with us. He’s incredible and I think he’d be a great addition in terms of voice… if we do go forward with it. We’ll see.”

If the show receives a renewal, we’ll likely learn more about the plot for the next season, including the fate of John and Jane. Or maybe, new actors will replace Glover and Erskine for the next one and each season will feature different Smiths. Stay tuned to learn more.

The first season of Mr. and Mrs. Smith is streaming on Prime Video.
