About
Mount Stewart is one of the most inspiring and unusual gardens in the National Trust's ownership. The garden reflects a rich tapestry of design and great planting artistry that was the hallmark of Edith, Lady Londonderry. The mild climate of Strangford Lough allows astonishing levels of planting experimentation. The formal areas exude a strong Mediterranean feel and resemble an Italian villa landscape; the wooded areas support a range of plants from all corners of the world, ensuring something to see whatever the season. Mount Stewart House re-opened after our 3 year long restoration project. We've brought back the elegance and charm of the house when it was home of the 7th Marchioness Edith, Lady Londonderry and her family in the early 20th century and we look forward to welcoming you to enjoy in all its splendor. Six kilometers of walking trails wind through a landscape ‘lost in time’ and establishes Mount Stewart’s reputation as one of the best-preserved Irish country demesnes.

- Victoria D17 contributionsHidden gemWe weren't planning on coming here, but found it by accident and we are so glad we did. So much rich history in this house. The house is also stunning to look at and the items on display are wonderfully preserved. The gardens were beautiful also. We are planning on coming back again when we are back over in N.IrelandVisited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 13 June 2023
- Aisling McC37 contributionsLovely day outWe thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Mount Stewart this week. The staff were lovely at reception, making us feel welcome from the get-go. The volunteers were very informative in the house. I loved wandering round and talking to the volunteers about the history of the house. Fiona, Wallace, Jason and Phillip are all examples of people who are very knowledgeable of the place in which they work and they are brilliant at interacting with the public. It would have been lovely to see more of the house, especially the servants' quarters. Beautiful gardens. Lovely coffee and cake in the tea room too! Would definitely recommend this amazing place to all NT members.Visited July 2023Written 4 July 2023
- SH8 contributionsPerfect, dog friendly,no picnic tables, some ares closed in winter.Perfect, beautiful, plenty of different walks, a small cafe, (a bit pricey and portions are small but this is usual for national trust), kids natural play park accessed by an inclined pathway which may not be suitable for someone with walking difficulties (no dogs in this kids area). There are NO picnic tables. Dog friendly on leads with a large exercise off lead field. Friendly staff. House tours available. Gift shop and small library. The only down side is that the information leaflets on the ground are limited (because they want you to buy tours or books presumably) so if this is your thing prepare in advance as there's so much history and interesting facts as you walk around it's a shame to miss out. For example the famous Dodo garden figures have a story attached. Find the cork tree, the wooden mushroom hidden by the lake (I say it's were he wood fairies dance when everyone's gone home), visit the rose garden in season, look out for the little pet name plaques for beloved heaven sent pets. Note that if you come in winter that some of the walks are closed so check in advance.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 July 2023
- hillfieldjpGloucester, United Kingdom228 contributionsBeautiful gardens and treasure filled houseWe spent a couple of hours walking around the gardens and enjoying the different areas and seeing the vast range of plants from all over the world. The volunteers were busy keeping them looking good and we loved the stone statues in the Dodo garden. We walked up to the walled garden and were interested to see how it was being developed. After a very good bowl of soup for lunch in the cafe, we went round the house. This was made particularly enjoyable by the guides who were so knowledgeable and amusing, happy to chat about the house, it’s history and the people who have lived there over the years. Well done to the NT for recruiting such a great group of people to show us around.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 July 2023
- benh1692Diss, United Kingdom31 contributionsSuch stunning gardens - not to be missedSuch stunning gardens! Late July was the perfect time to be there (although obviously that depends on how the weather has been) and the range of plants and the planting was fabulous. The house is also amazing although we were not able to visit all of it and some was closed for renovation. If you like gardens, you must put this on your list. Wonderful.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 July 2023
- ian1811Scotland, United Kingdom599 contributionsOMG!OMG what a place. And this as a summer residence!! If you are in the area go and visit, you will not be disappointed. The house is stunning. You are a bit restricted due to it still being lived in, but the rooms you are allowed in, WOW! The guides are fantastic with the information, and ask any questions. Take time to wander around the formal gardens and if you wish the grounds.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 August 2023
- LPBradley32 contributionsExcellent facilities for disabled visitors.I visited Mount Stewart with my sister. We had phoned a couple of days earlier and booked 2 mobility scooters. We phoned when we arrived and were directed to a car park which was closer to the reception. 2 scooters were delivered to us in the car park by Jenny and Lesley, who then talked us through the facilities and advised where was not accessible on the scooters. We were also told where we could access wheelchairs as they could be used in areas such as the house, where scooters were not permitted. We were accompanied to the reception and shown where we could leave the scooters. My sister was helped into a wheelchair which allowed us to go into the shop and tea room. The scooters were excellent and we were able to go around the estate, which my sister had not been able to do for a long time. The gardens are well kept and accessible. A big thanks to all the staff at Mount Stewart for making our day so easy. We will return soon and would highly recommend it to anyone with mobility issues. You should ring to book the scooters or wheelchairs before you visit.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 2 September 2023
- Patrick M2 contributionsWorth a visit.Interesting place and beautiful grounds. Very helpful and informative staff. One issue was the cafe. Staff were very busy and working hard. Food we got was ok but not all the food on display was covered and flies were landing in some of the slices of cake / traybakes etc . I appreciate it was a very hot day but it was very off putting. Some food was covered but surely more care should be taken.Thank you for getting in touch, we value all feedback. We're glad to hear you had a good day. We have passed your feedback onto our tea room team and they have advised that food hygiene is at the fore front of everything they do. The summer time can be a challenge with the natural increase of wasps and bees but please be assured we take it very seriously and will continue to ensure a high standard of food hygiene.Written 4 October 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 September 2023

A fabulous location on the banks of Strangford Lough and a beautiful house in the middle. It must be magical on a summer’s day.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 September 2023
- Lorna B5 contributionsExtraordinary gardensStunning formal gardens with extensive park land behind, full of interesting trees and shrubs. Well worth doing some of the long walks rather than just focusing on the pretty parts. Interesting house with an interesting history in the middle. Cafe and shop both a bit sub par but that’s not the reason for a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 September 2023

£14 GBP pp entry to the House and Gardens on a single ticket. NT members get in for free.
An Oz NT membership was readily accepted.
Free car parking to all.
Very friendly and helpful room guides in the House, who have an obvious passion for their endeavours. The downstairs rooms (only some are open) in the House are well worth the visit BUT the highlight was the formal gardens close to the House. In early May there were some wonderful floral displays there.
I am sure that time spent exploring the other grounds would also be very worthwhile.
A must do when visiting the Belfast area.
Free backpack storage at the start of the house walk through.

My friends and I were staying for a long weekend nearby and decided to pay a visit. The house exceeded our expectations - so much history there. The ladies who are voluntary tour guides are amazing, and we had such a great time. Plus, we learned so much about the family who have been living there. Thank you for such an inspiring experience.

We visited the gardens at Mt Stewart and had a lovely time wandering around the paths. Very friendly staff welcomed us and provided lots of info. Its £14.30 each, if your not a member. I always think the National Trust is a bit expensive. If they made it say £10 to get in it would be better. Not everyone wants to join but does want to visit a few sites a year. Not even a discount for seniors.

£14 for one ticket, £3.5 for a bottle of water. Selling Chinese import items in the shop. Asking extra on entry to donate to the place. No thank you. Stop thinking you're Disneyland and can charge similar prices. When you stop taking the pi*s I'll change my review. Will never be back.

We enjoyed a family walk around the lake with the Autumnal leaf colours of orange, yellow, red and gold catching the eye on a dull day.
In the house we were warmly welcomed by the guides in every room who were friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Very impressed by the restoration of the superb Central Hall floor with its beautiful geometric design in Scrabo sandstone, painstakingly and lovingly returned to its former glory.
For anyone following a vegan philosophy and way of life for ethical reasons, others choosing plant based options for environmental protection reasons, or people with food intolerances, the cafe is an excellent choice. All the scones are baked without eggs, cow's milk, butter or any other animal products. I ended up with a larger lunch than planned; a tasty fruit scone with a lovely texture and dairy free spread, a choc chip cookie and a crumble topped mince pie, accompanied by a large Americano. Keisha, who took our order, was friendly and welcoming, as were the two members of staff at reception who kindly offered the use of a mobility scooter to my sister.
Looking forward already to our next visit.

While it has always been a good place for a walk, the gardens are failing more and more every time we visit. An increasing number of areas are being hacked back, not carefully pruned as one would expect. Worst of all is at the lower end of the lake, where there used to be a good grouping of mature shrubs and trees. Now it has been brutally reduced, destroying a rare brachyglottis tree, radically changing the swans’ environment (they nest by the lake every year) and exposing the lake sluice which could lead to a nasty accident if someone was curious enough. Other areas of the formal gardens nearer the house have been very much neglected as well. It’s all a great shame. Go back just five years, if that, and it was so much better. Various rare and unusual plants are disappearing around the gardens as well. Strange.

I organised a trip with friends to the area recently. I planned a morning coffee stop with a little shopping at the estate. Two of us had membership cards. We were asked at reception to pay house admission for the 2 non members to avail of the tea rooms and shop. It was so embarrassing and when I explained we only wanted morning coffee I was advised to go on up the road to Harrisons.
Point 1 .. 2 of us could have availed of the shop and sent our friends to wait for us in the car which we would not contemplate.
Point 2 .. I have read the rational behind this decision on another negative post concerning this policy and am so disappointed to see the National Trust enforce this system.
Point 3 .. we did go to Harrisons which was exceptional.. we spent a considerable amount of money in their restaurant and shop which could have been spent in Mountstewart.
Point 4 .. having gone on to Greyabbey it is questionable whether we would actually return to Mountstewart having found better value and service elsewhere.
Very disappointing 😕

Dear Sam,
Thank you for your feedback. We see you have read the reasoning for the shop and tearoom access policy and we do understand this is disappointing to you. As we explain below there has been a carefully thought out reason behind this to ensure it is also fair to people paying for a membership and is largely inline with the policies of lots of other visitor attractions in Northern Ireland.
We made the decision to follow the operational process of other pay for entry National Trust properties to reserve access to our retail and food & beverage outlets for National Trust Members and paying visitors.
Unfortunately, we had been seeing increasing incidences of non-members asking to use these facilities and then accessing the property without paying admission which was very challenging for our team to address and unfair to those who pay their membership or admission fee to this wonderful property. This was to ensure that we were providing a fair and consistent message to all our visitors.
This information is noted on signage as you access the main visitor route to reception and is noted on our website under Eating & Shopping section stating, ‘normal admission applies, National Trust members free’, however, we have also added this to our opening times section of our website for clarity.
We hope you do return to Mount Stewart again.

House was great, volunteer guides great and informative, gardens looking well in winter sunshine and children’s outdoor play park is a bit of a walk for young children. Take a picnic as the cafe is dead slow and stop service although old is ok.

Thank you taking the time to review Mount Stewart. We appreciate all feedback, so we're glad you enjoyed your visit. We're sorry you felt the service appeared slow in the tearoom, high season times like December can be especially busy. Customer service is at the fore front of everything we do so please rest assured we do try our best, as we make every cup of coffee to order while taking hot food orders and serving treats from the counter.
We hope you'll pop in again on your next visit.
Thanks from Mount Stewart Team

Mount Stewart is a magical place with beautiful gardens all year round. Staff are friendly and there is a lovely gift and book shop. Tour of the house is very interesting.
My only gripe is the cafe - I paid £6.25 for a bowl of soup and had to pay an extra £1.50 for some wheaten bread with it. The bread was wrapped in plastic and taken out of the refrigerator so was hard and dry. Nearly £8 for a bowl of soup and 2 slices of dry bread in a cafe where you have to queue up with a tray is a bit ridiculous! Next time I'll bring a picnic.

Ian's reply is the best option. Public transport to / from Mount Stewart is rather infrequent. Hiring a car for a limited period is unlikely to be a cost-effective option. Taxi may be costly, but it enables you to decide time you can spend at Mount Stewart.
