This is a ten CD collection. The songs cover Motown's inception in the late 50s, to the early 80s. There are over 100 songs in this anthology, all remastered in stereo. Also enclosed is a booklet which not only lists the songs, but covers the history of Motown, Detroit and Los Angeles. The booklet does not give much credit to the great Funk Brothers band, which is my only complaint. they were actively involved in the songs recorded in Detroit. I believe this anthology was released in the mid 90s, and is a fine addition for any Motown lover.

This set is what we might kindly refer to as a crapfest. That is no slight on the music, which is drawn from Motown's priceless archives and consists mostly of undeniable classic hits.

But the configuration is really poor: About 10 tracks per CD. These are very short (mostly) Motown hits, and you could comfortably fit around 25 on a disc. So instead of 4 CDs, you have 10. Why? Well, to make this appear to be more than it is, of course. A 10CD set sounds so much more impressive than a 4CD set, right? More importantly, the manufacturers hoped to charge you accordingly.

On top of that, the sound quality is pretty poor, and this is certainly not going to be anyones "go to" set, if they have other decent Motown releases in their collection.

In the end, I can't see any reason anyone would buy this set, unless you find it for an extremely low price. And even then, the inconvenience of switching discs every 10-11 (short) tracks may well be a deal breaker.

This collection does not really take full advantage of the CD format. With about 30 minutes of music on each disc this collection could have been compiled on 4 CDs. The CD format really shows up the flaws in whatever generation of tape this collection was mastered from. It doesn't bother me that if the singles were originally issued in mono, they were issued in their mono versions here because USUALLY that means a fuller warmer sound. Unfortunately, despite the mono mix, these songs don't sound as full as they ought to.

For example, on The Four Tops 'I'll Be There' the bass is noticeably lacking in presence as compared to even some vinyl pressings. This was issued originally in 1997 so perhaps that explains the lack of remixing or noise reduction - many tracks are pretty hissy.

To Motown lovers, 76 of these tracks (with an additional 104 hits) are available on Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection Volume One and Volume Two. Every song I compared between the two collections sounded colder on this set and warmer on the Hitsville collections.

I purchased this collection because The last track of discs 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 & 10 are all previously unreleased. These 6 tracks are unique to this collection and most of them are pretty good but not obvious 'hit' material. 24 other hits and Zoom by The Commodores (the only previously released track that was not a hit single) are collected here but not on the Hitsville USA collections.

Liner notes are superb and cover the history of Motown in the context of each artist below and their relationship with Barry Gordy and later producers. Photos are in black and white but very high quality.

As Amazon includes no track listing, here it is with release dates for the original singles. A * means that this song is NOT on the higher quality Hitsville collections. The previously unreleased tracks are marked as such.
