Neighborhood: Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie
Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie has one of Canada's most prominent Italian communities, with Little Italy concentrated along the convivial bends of Saint-Lawrence Boulevard. Known for its fantastic bars and authentic Italian fare, the domain includes the Jean-Talon Market, the largest public market in North America. Open year-round, sunny months see fruit and vegetable stalls set up outside the main chalet, while blustery weather draws crowds indoors to meat and cheese sellers, spices and truffles stalls, and for regional delicacies such as rare Charlevoix lamb. While the market dictates what's fresh for local restaurateurs, visitors can please more than their palates, taking in the Renaissance architecture and frescos of Madonna della Difesa, the picturesque Rue Saint-Rominique with its cheerful homes and splendid gardens, or the ornamented thoroughfare of Plaza Saint-Hubert.

- Mia AndreaLos Angeles, California23 contributionsGorgeous garden but under construction for Summer season at the momentAn easy place to spend half a day. A bit outside the main city but worth the metro trip. I caught them right before the summer season so things were under construction, a lot of the gardens just had dirt or dead plants, many of the ponds didn't have water and the main building was under construction. Nonetheless, the gardens that weren't under construction were gorgeous. I still would recommend going to check it out. Especially if you're a plant lover.Visited May 2023Written May 12, 2023
- Janet Marie & m’ArchibaldMichigan3 contributionsThe perfect day outdoorsA year ago in Paris we visited the Jardin Botanique, to that point in my life, the most impressive collection of plant life I’d ever seen. Our visit to the Botanical Gardens here in Montréal blew that experience out of the water. Don’t get me wrong, Paris is no slouch in the flora department, but the range and diversity of the Montréal collection, paired with the presentation in really authentic habitats really changed the game. Not to mention the gorgeous architecture of the China gardens, tea ceremonies and taiko drummers in the Japanese Gardens, and the largest and most aromatic collection of lilac trees and bushes anywhere—it was delightful. Cap that with a collection of mostly locally sourced and expertly prepared lunch selections—it was an incomparable day.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 21, 2023

- Lynne1153Edinburgh, United Kingdom886 contributionsBeautifulWhat a beautiful place to visit! Stunning, peaceful gardens with lots to suit all different ages. The outdoor cafe was a bit disappointing- big queues, not a huge menu and pricey so probably wouldn’t eat there again. We loved sitting in the yellow chairs and watching the world go by!Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 9, 2023
- Ashley JDallas, Texas49 contributionsGreat place - needs more refreshments and path markerswe visited in July and the botanical garden entrance was under some construction. We took the metro to station Pie IX on the green line. To reach the area, it was a short walk from there, although there was a big hill. Once inside, we really enjoyed all of the plants and the way they were grouped into little worlds. The China Garden was the most memorable and so photogenic. Fans of Epcot will surely love it. I will say it would have been nice to have more refreshments throughout the park. It was only 74° but humid when we went, and we never saw any water other than right after we purchased our tickets. I also thought it was odd that they sold glass water containers in a park. Although there certainly were shaded areas, some of the main arteries of the park are in full sun. Some of the signs were misleading regarding where they pointed, and we definitely spent way more time walking because of it. They provide maps but it would be so helpful to have named or labelled pathways and direction markers so you can confirm your location. One thing that stood out to me as different from other botanical gardens, such as Dallas and Cincinnati, is that this one did not have hard surfaces like bricks or pavers or asphalt. Everything was pea gravel and compacted soil pathways. This makes for a more natural experience, however, if it has rained recently, there are some muddy parts, and I almost slipped couple of times. My favorite part was the irisis and lilies around a big pond with lily pads. The area was like a Van Gough painting and so peaceful. They had adairondak chairs along the edge and I could have spent the whole day reading. Nearby fast food to refuel: La Belle Province - diagonal from the entrance. Note: insectarium is very nearby and shown on the maps but admission is not included.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 17, 2023
- William KimLondon, Canada100 contributionsA must see in MontrealThe Montreal Botanical Gardens are seriously amazing. I wasn't so sure what to expect when my friend recommended I come here with him and some of his other friends, but I am so glad that I trusted their recommendations. The botanical gardens are composed of so many great places to see while here, from Chinese and Japanese gardens to butterfly conservatories and arboretums, and being here makes you feel like you've been transported into a calm, serene, perfect world with no problems. Seriously, this is probably one of the best botanical gardens I've been to! Everywhere you go is filled with plants, flowers and details of all kinds, but all well maintained and chosen accordingly to catch your attention as you stroll through the gardens. You could easily spend hours here looking around and not even realize it. There is such a quiet, serene feeling here that is quite unique given how this garden is located within a major city in Canada. There are also student discounts available, so students in the area should definitely take advantage of that. Also, plan on spending an entire day here. When I was here, there was not enough time for me to see everything here as I was visiting from Ontario, and only had so much time to do things. Seriously - Montreal has one of the best botanical gardens I have EVER been to! This city is very lucky to have this gem here. I’ll be back for sure.Visited May 2023Traveled with friendsWritten July 21, 2023

- eskdunningHermitage, Tennessee287 contributionsBeautiful gardensWhat a delightful way to enjoy a gorgeous day in Montreal. We spent approximately 3 hours at the botanical gardens. While we felt we'd done justice to the gardens, we didn't enter any of the indoor exhibits. The outdoor spa e is divided into smaller themed gardens. Our favorites were the Chinese, Japanese, and Alpine gardens. If you enjoy nature, I highly recommend these gardens.Visited May 2023Traveled with friendsWritten August 2, 2023

Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time to wander around but what we did see was gorgeous. We had bought an annual ticket which included the garden, the Biodome, the Insectarium and the Planetarium which are all on the same complex. You can get to the garden from the Viau metro station on the green line.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 7, 2023

You could spend hours exploring the garden! I was there for quite a while just wondering around and I still didn't get to see everything. There are fun little surprises that you wouldn't expect, when I was there, they had sheep in an area you could go up to and just kinda hang out with. Overall it was beautiful, lots of different things to see from plants to art. It was a morning well spent.

Montreal is proud of its botanical gardens, a sight to be seen for its quality and creativity. A little away from the center of town, but well worth the detour. It is the kind of visit which you will remember for its beauty and grace. Some vistas will keep you enthralled. A strong YES.

We were here during the heat wave, it was 95° out, but we managed to see most of the gardens. We were very impressed with each section, a lot of details in each flower bed. We were able to visit most of the gardens except for the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, which are under renovations. So many beautiful things to look at.

I visited here in June 2018 with friends. The Alpine garden was lovely! We spent hours here and the lunch at the restaurant was surprisingly good.
We were a little disappointed that the Chinese garden was closed for refurbishment whilst we were there but there was still plenty to see anyway. We had read in advance about the Biodome being closed so this wasn't an issue, although I'd love to see it when it's finished.
Also I had seen photos of some amazing flower sculptures on Google, but didn't realise until I asked someone at the tree house that these were from 2013 :(
All in all though, it was a good day, despite some disappointments.

This is a vast botanical garden with an insectarium inside as well. Right now there is a lot of construction going on and it definitely played spoilsport while taking pictures. I would recommend going when everything is done. We visited the Canada day weekend and it was not packed like other places. Chinese garden was good but it had a lot of detours due to construction. Japanese Garden had bonsai trees alone. Skipped going to First Nations garden as it was super hot that day. Not sure if it's worth spending 20$ on a ticket. The lines were super long and under the sun. I booked it on my smartphone and hence saved a lot of time.

The Botanical Gardens did not disappoint. Highlights were the Chinese and Japanese Gardens and the incredible size of the place. It was very well laid out with the many varieties of plants all well labelled. We went on a gorgeous summer day. Tips include bringing your own water bottle and making use of the clean well maintained public fountains. I would go back in a heart beat. Leave time for a drink on the large patio outside the restaurant. It featured excellent local beers and ciders. Love it!

You just can't go once to the Montreal Botanical Gardens. It's a repeat experience because you just can't get enough of those magnificent trees, gorgeous plants, both seasonal and perennial, and of course those totally amazing roses and flowers. You can loose yourself in their beauty and infinite scents, that only nature can bestow. Man can only enhance it in an incredible breathtaking arrangement. Lots of artwork here, and much thought was given to its location. It is also a harbor of peace and tranquility, so necessary for our minds and souls, in this turbulent world we live in.

We went there for picture opportunities and it was a fantastic setting for that, but the price of admission is quite steep: 16$ per person! Since we were only there for about 1h00, I thought it was kind of a rip-off. It's probably more interesting to go towards mid-summer, when flowers are in bloom, otherwise I would completely pass on the Botanical Gardens..

Even in the rain the gardens were lovely! Cosmos in many colors were blooming, defying the gray rain. We especially enjoyed the Japanese Garden and wished the Chinese garden had been open, but it was being renovated. Peaceful, serene, lovely place!

If you visit garden in day and get the first tickets to lights at night, what can you do in the hour the garden is closed? Are there any restaurants very nearby that you could eat a quick meal in between?

We got a salad and pizza at Pizzeria Heirloom which was about a 20-25 minute walk. Uber would be a possibility too. There were some other restaurants which looked very popular around Pizzeria Heirloom as well.

Hello! I want to apologize for not answering your question earlier. The person responsible in the past changed job and I forgot to take care of it. The answer is no. The Mosaïcultures took place in the Montréal Botanical Garden many years ago just for 1 season.
Hi when you park in the parking lot can you leave and come back in the same parking cost?

We will be in Montreal on Oct 30 & 31. I'm a little confused about the tickets for the Botanical gardens and the Garden of Lights. If we buy a timed ticket for the Garden of Lights -- let's say at 6:30 ( they start at 5:30)-- Do we need to also buy a separate admission to the Botanical Gardens or does ticket to Garden of Lights cover both entrance fees?
Website for Botanical Gardens says hours on the 2 days we will be there are 9 am to 9 pm. We were thinking about getting to the gardens around 4:30, touring the gardens and then going to the Garden of Lights around 6:30 or 7:00 assuming it will be dark by then.
Another question is that Oct 31 is the last day for Garden of Lights and is Halloween. Since we have a choice of Oct 30 or 31, which night would you suggest going to there?
Thanks for your help

No, the entrance fee includes the gardens, greenhouse and lights show. 6:30pm is a good time for the end of Oct. I was just there and went to the 7pm showing which was a great time since it was dark enough to enjoy the light displays. Wear comfortable walking shoes, the garden is pretty large.
