I had visited the Castle back in 1973 and having a lifelong interest in Henry V wanted to return. The Museum was most interesting and the lady at the entrance desk very friendly. The Castle ruins are small compared to it's original size and the Great Tower where Henry V was born is closed to the public as it has Army property inside. However i had called in advance and someone kindly opened it up for me to visit and take photos. I was told the Castle is administered by CADW (Cadw is the historic environment service of the Welsh Government) Personally i think it is a shame that such an important and historic building is not given more prominence. One important detail, i am being pedantic, is the date of Henry V's birth. All over Monmouth it is marked as 1387, either August or September when in fact it was September 16th 1386, this is confirmed by several contemporary documents. Obviously not easy to change on the statue in Shire Hall but maybe it could be corrected on various displays. Monmouth was a nice town to visit with several historical churches and the Monnow Bridge & Gate.

It’s such a shame to score one but over the last two years I think out of ten visits I’ve only been inside the museum twice. It’s such a interesting museum once inside but very hit and miss on when it’s open especially when it states outside April to October daily 2-5. It’s a pity something couldn’t be placed in the window to say it won’t be open that day to save visitors hanging about. I think I must have saw about a dozen people walk up to the door to find it closed in about fifteen minutes of waiting. If volunteers aren’t available to open it’s a pity the collection couldn’t be moved to the shire hall or the museum in Monmouth where there are paid staff

This review is of the Castle only as at time of visiting the Military museum was closed due to good old Covid!
The picture shown IS the Castle, that’s it nothing more. This probably explains why it is free to visit. A couple of information boards prolong the visit to 10 minutes. I know it is no one’s fault but please don’t expect to see a proper Castle.

Located on Castle Hill, close to the centre of Monmouth, both Monmouth Castle and the Monmouth Regimental Museum are free to visit. Little remains of the castle birth place of Henry V, but enough to be of interest (the curtain wall, gatehouse and great round keep) and, on the day we visited, was quite atmospheric with mist eerily rolling down the hills in the background. The military museum itself is a listed building on the Monmouth Heritage Trail. Open 2-5pm most days, this small volunteer-run museum has plenty of exhibits pertaining to the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, a regiment which has given continuous service to the crown since 1539.

Very small castle, well kept though. There is a castle and military museum attached, but this is only open 2pm-5pm during the summer.

We thought this would be rubbish, but it surprised us. Very interesting, but a little daunting to enter as it seemed to be a military place and we were not sure if we should be there, regardless of the signs!
We were there at 10am and not sure if you can go inside, but we spent a good 30 minutes looking at the exhibits and the museum and found it quite relaxing.
If in Monmouth, you should have a quick look at it.

At a time when military museums are being closed and amalgamated it is good to see this small but detail packed museum still open and free to enter. Being staffed by volunteers it has limited opening hours but is good for an hour or so and you will still find things you missed first time if you go a second time.

We visited the castle but unfortunately the museum was closed. There was a barrier down but army personnel invited us in to have a look around. This was a very educational and sobering visit and we took time to read all the plaques.

Really wanted to see inside the museum but closed due to covid. Can only review the outside and information. Looks very interesting and informative. Will be on my list for next time....
