Biografía del autor

Graham Greene (1904-1991), whose long life nearly spanned the length of the twentieth century, was one of its greatest novelists. Educated at Berkhamsted School and Balliol College, Oxford, he started his career as a sub-editor of theLondon Times. He began to attract notice as a novelist with his fourth book,Orient Express, in 1932. In 1935, he trekked across northern Liberia, his first experience in Africa, told inA Journey Without Maps (1936). He converted to Catholicism in 1926, an edifying decision, and reported on religious persecution in Mexico in 1938 inThe Lawless Roads, which served as a background for his famous The Power and the Glory, one of several Catholic” novels (BrightonRock, The Heart of the Matter, The End of the Affair).During the war he worked for the British secret service in Sierra Leone; afterward, he began wide-ranging travels as a journalist, which were reflected in novels such asThe Quiet American, Our Man in Havana, The Comedians,Travels with My Aunt, The Honorary Consul, The Human Factor,Monsignor Quixote, and The Captain and the Enemy. As well as his many novels, Graham Greene wrote several collections of short stories, four travel books, six plays, two books of autobiography,A Sort of Life and Ways of Escape, two biographies, and four books for children. He also contributed hundreds of essays and film and book reviews toThe Spectator and other journals, many of which appear in the late collectionReflections. Most of his novels have been filmed, including The Third Man, which the author first wrote as a film treatment. Graham Greene was named Companion of Honour and received the Order of Merit among numerous other awards.

As deep as it is beautiful, I'd recommend to any intelligent reader.

From the existing views I'd expected something more frivolous, it starts-out comedic - & never completely drop the humour - but takes a darker turn. It is ultimately an adventure tale, but far from a shallow, heroes and villains, crash-bang-wallop rippling-yarn (though I like those too). There are complex characters with mixed motives and a profundity of thought in every chapter.

I say it gets dark but pretty emotional too. This' one to think about. Would probably reward selective re-reading

Also worth it for the insight into WWII home-front London perspective. The backdrop is "life in the Blitz" & captures something of the attitudes, scenes, way of life et ccetera.... This was published in 1943 I think so it woupd have been recent memory for readers.

Read it. If you're disappointed, the fault is probably with you

It has been really helpful reading other people's reviews AFTER I read this book in a day, because it is so odd and I couldn't quite get my reactions to fit together. It is gripping and funny - the fete scene had me laughing out loud in a crowded train; and there is a real sense of unease, and even of evil that pervades the novel, as well as the usual Greenian sadness. As one reviewer here says, the opening is outstanding - just fantastic and if you know contemporary bloomsbury the picture of it during the war is moving. But as other reviewers note, the tone is very uneven and that becomes a bit jarring; some of the more serious themes feel a bit portentous in the context; and the plot is a bit daft, in the end. But I LOVED reading it. I read Travels With My Aunt two years' ago and laughed and laughed at the opening bits and read it more or less at a sitting. But the end is a bit of a disappointment after that magical beginning. I don't remember that problem when I used to read GG as a teenager - the Power and the Glory, the Heart of the Matter ...all those incredibly sad and beautiful stories. I now need to look at them again. Have been scared that I will be disappointed, now I am older. So far, the only GG i've really not been able to read is DR Fischer - and I am fascinated that everyone reviewing it on amazon found it amazing. I've tried several times. But Dr Fischer is so loathsome it seems to me that the only reason to want to watch him humiliating equally loathsome, though less wealthy, guests is some sort of sadistic/perverse curiosity. I've tried several times, and just never managed it. Whereas the Ministry of Fear, while clearly a pretty lightweight affair, is entertaining and for the great sad novels, GG left us enough to take our pick.

Many people have given this five stars, whereas if this novel was by an unknown author, no-one would have published, let alone lauded it. It starts well, but a far-fetched plot and ludicrous co-incidences belie credulity.
It's a heartening read for would-be novelists, reminding them that the best of authors can write dogs. Basically, Greene is a master of inner turmoil, but unable to write an action novel/thriller. He solves all his cliff-hangers by exploding bombs, which is plausible considering this book was written during war, but glaringly inept. This book was turned into a film starring Ray Milland; it did not get good reviews. I would give this book to my students to show them how not to write a novel....and then let them read Green's several masterpieces, to show them how it is done.
