Drummond Woodsum names managing director who began at the law firm nearly 40 years ago

Portland law firm Drummond Woodsum has named E. William (Bill) Stockmeyer as the firm’s new managing director, succeeding George Dilworth.

Stockmeyer began his career at Drummond Woodsum as a summer associate in 1985 and joined the firm as an attorney in 1986.

He devotes his practice to advising schools, municipalities and other local government entities on a wide variety of financial and business matters.

As the leader of the firm’s public finance group, Stockmeyer is rated AV, the highest rating awarded by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America in public finance and education law, and was elected to the American College of Bond Counsel.

He also serves on the board and finance committee of the Morrison Center, a Scarborough-based nonprofit that provides support services for people with developmental disabilities.

Stockmeyer received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cornell University. He received his Juris Doctorate from Cornell Law School.

“Like many here, there’s a deep emotional connection with the firm,” Stockmeyer said in a news release. “Drummond Woodsum is about our people and our team approach to client service.

"Going forward, I believe we face important transitions, and I’m excited for this opportunity. I see it as a chance to capitalize on our growth, nurture our distinctive culture, and guide Drummond Woodsum into the next era.”

Dilworth will continue practicing law, focusing on commercial litigation and white-collar defense.

“It has been a privilege to serve as the managing director, and I’m confident that Bill will guide the firm to the next level,” said Dilworth.

Drummond Woodsum is Maine's fourth-largest law firm, based on the number of Maine attorneys, according to the 2024 Mainebiz Book of Lists. The firm has 75 lawyers in the state and a total of 136 employees.
