Hundreds gathered at the Radisson Hotel in Sacramento Saturday morning to celebrate the life and career of former KCRA 3 reporter Mike Boyd.Boyd died earlier this month at age 74.On Saturday, friends, family and former colleagues remembered Boyd for all of his accomplishments during a career on KCRA 3 that spanned nearly 40 years."Two words make me remember Mike and think of him forever -- passion and style. Mike loved the work, and the work loved him, and it was all a perfect fit. There was no better reporter who walked the face of the Earth, no better communicator," former KCRA 3 anchor Stan Atkinson said."You see, Mike would very often call me early in the morning and imply through his tone that I was to drop whatever it was I was doing, and seek out every detail on whatever he was pursuing. 'I need to know.' He would make that exclamation in his very best broadcast voice, which also happened to be his only voice," Sacramento County Sheriff John McGinness said."As all of you know, who knew and loved Mike, Mike was, shall we say, careful with his money. Why spend a couple bucks for a hamburger at Jim Denny's when you can get the chef guest on the noon show to make a little extra," former KCRA 3 political reporter Steve Swatt said."And I remember the day he came off Air Force One. As we all know, Mike Boyd was 160 pounds soaking wet. He walked off Air Force One at 231 pounds -- ash trays, sheets, Jelly Bellies, his pockets out like this," former KCRA 3 anchor Kelly Brothers said."There was no story, no day that he didn't love, no moment when he didn't cherish the privilege that he had of being on television. He loved every second of it. The other thing he loved, the other person he loved was Jackie. The two of them showed us how marriage should be done. Only they could get away with calling themselves 'The Love Boyds,'" KCRA 3 anchor Lois Hart said."Everyone loved and respected Mike Boyd. While all of us in the family have had these thoughts for ourselves, realizing the full scope of his reach has been an absolutely amazing experience for us," Mike Boyd Jr. said.Boyd is survived by his five children and his beloved wife, Jackie. Also Saturday, Boyd was honored by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Color Guard -- an hour rarely given to those outside law enforcement.McGinness said the honor was given to Boyd for the service he provided to the community through his journalism.
