'America's Got Talent' winner Michael Grimm regains consciousness, taken off ventilator, wife says

Former "America’s Got Talent" winner Michael Grimm has regained consciousness following a mystery illness that landed him sedated in the hospital, his wife said.

Lucie Zolcerva-Grimm said on Instagram Monday her 44-year-old husband had been taken off a ventilator after being hospitalized in intensive care for at least two weeks.

Doctors recently placed the Las Vegas-based singer in the ICU after looking "sickly" and behaving in a "fussy" way, his wife reported.

"He's no longer sedated... quite a bit awake now," Zolcerva-Grimm said in a video clip shared with his more than 8,000 followers on the platform after his health issues became public last week.

Although he doesn't have a strong enough voice to communicate, his wife said, "his voice is slowly coming back" and he is being weaned off medications doctors prescribed him.

What happened to Michael Grimm?

Zolcerva-Grimm has not disclosed what caused Grimm's health issues.

Although doctors removed his ventilator, she said her husband was now struggling with hallucinations, anxiety and other side effects from his medications. She said he is also suffering from atrophied muscles from being bedridden for nearly two weeks.

"It’s creating a lot of confusion for him, and a lot of frustration and anger, because he thinks things are happening that really aren’t," Zolcerva-Grimm said.

She said her husband doesn’t always recognize her but said the doctors told her the side effects will wear off within a week.

Zolcerva-Grimm initially took her husband to the emergency room after she said she thought he suffered a stroke, but later said that was not the case.

Grimm's wife previously said her husband must undergo vocal chord repair after having to rely on a ventilator which left him with "no voice."

She asked for prayers in her social media post.
