The 89-year-old star, whose on-screen career has spanned more than seven decades, was channelling a former war hero desperate to escape from his care home so that he can flee to Normandy and be part of the 70th anniversary tribute to the D-Day landings.
The courageous decision means abandoning his wheelchair, and struggling along with a frame to make sure he doesn't miss out.
Filming locations have included the beach at Camber Sands in East Sussex, where he was recently seen.
His soon to be televised "great escape" echoes that of real life war hero Bernard Jordan, who did exactly the same thing back in 2014 in order to join his soldier comrades on a beach in Normandy and commemorate the fallen.
