Birth and Parentage

Michael Albemarle Bowes-Lyon was born in Hertfordshire, England on 29 May 1940, the youngest child and second son of Lt Col Hon. Michael Claude Hamilton Bowes-Lyon and Elizabeth Margaret Cator, (scion of that gentry family of Woodbastick). He usually went by his middle name of Albemarle and was known as 'Alby' by his family.[1]The name 'Albemarle' while originating in ancient Normandy (see Counts of Aumale, Normandy) was also the name of his maternal grand- and great grandfathers. His elder brother Fergus Michael Claude Bowes-Lyon inherited the title of 17th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Two twin sisters, Lady Patricia Maud, and Lady Mary Cecilia, were born 8 years before him.

Career

On Friday, 28 May 1948, the Biggleswade Chronicle reported on

PRINCESS MARGARET’S MEASLES A London newspaper last week stated that Princess Margaret may have caught measles from her cousin, eight years-old Michael Albemarle Bowes-Lyon, son of Lt.-Col. The Hon. Michael Bowes-Lyon, of Gastllngs, Southill. The boy is known in the family as Alby. He went to London for the Royal Silver Wedding last month and on the following Sunday met Princess Margaret at tea with the Duke of Gloucester's children. Afterwards he developed measles. He has now recovered and has gone away. His 16 years old twin sisters are at school and escaped. [2]

When Albemarle was 13, he attended as page to his cousin Princess Margaret, at the Coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth. His elder brother, known as Fergus, an officer in the Royal Scots, was on duty, lining the route of the Coronation procession. [3][4]

Albemarle had a close relationship with the Queen Mother. In November 1955, at 15, he was a page, (in scarlet tunic and bearing a sword) [5] at his aunt's installation as Chancellor of the University of London.

LONDON UNIVERSITY TO HONOUR QUEEN MOTHER When Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother is installed as Chancellor of the University of London at the Royal Festival Hall to-day, Princess Margaret and the Princess Royal will watch the proceedings from the ceremonial box. The Queen Mother's page will be 15- year-old Albemarle Bowes-Lyon, her nephew, who was Princess Margaret's page at the Coronation. [6]

He was photographed by the Tatler and Bystander (4 February 1953), on his first day of term at Eton, standing on the pavement with his housemaster, R. J. N. Parr, waving to his father as Capt. the Hon. Michael Bowes-Lyon drove away on what looked like a bleak, misty February morning. The Tatler noted that

He was one of the early arrivals, with an opportunity to look round at his new surroundings, before night and the deluge.[7]

After his education at Eton College, [4] he studied at Magdalen College, Oxford.[8]

He was involved with 4 registered companies:

  • Director of Coutts & Company (1969 - 28 May 1993) Company number 00036695[9]. This oldest and most prestigious of private banks encompassed Strand Nominees, which handled investments for the children of the Royal Family.
  • Trustee of Elizabeth Finn Care Trust (1998-) (Company number 00515297) (Social work activities without accommodation, not elsewhere classified)[9]
  • Hon. Treasurer: Family Service Units (1976-1996). (Company number 00456426) (Social work without accommodation)[10]
  • Governor of the Peabody Trust, (1982-2000)[11]

He was godfather to his sister Mary's daughter, Sarah Rose. [12] He was raised to the rank of an Earl’s younger son on 15 February 1974. [13]

On 9 April 2002, Bowes-Lyon was a family participant in the funeral procession of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who was his great aunt.[14]

His contribution towards the writing of William Shawcroft's book, 'Counting One's Blessings: the selected letters of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother' is acknowledged in the said book's preface. [15]

A painting by John Frederick Herring (Sr.) Cotherstone, A Bay Racehorse In A Stable, passed down through the Bowes-Lyon family from the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and last owned by Bowes-Lyon, sold at Christie's, New York, NY, in the 1994-1995 season, for $13,800.[16][17]

Someone who seems to have avoided publicity, (he has no Wikipedia page, and virtually no public photographs of him exist online) his hobby was hill-walking. [11]

He did not receive an invitation to the Coronation of King Charles III on 6 May 2023.

Death

He passed away, aged 83, due to old age, on 30 October 2023. [20]His death was confirmed by the Dundee Courier:

BOWES LYON (Hon.) Michael Albemarle (Alby), died on October 30, 2023, aged 83, brother of Fergus (17th Earl of Strathmore), Mary and Patricia, much loved and hugely missed by his family and friends. Private funeral. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.[1]
