Brighton Beach is the sea-side playground of one of Melbourne's, most affluent suburbs. It's a good beach, fine for swimming; Brighton Beach is best-known for the bathing boxes. The bathing boxes are colorfully painted; they are popular with visitors, who often take selfies. The bathing boxes are mostly owned by local residents, who use them to get changed, store their clothes and so on while they are in the water. Brighton Beach is well-known for its family background.

The beach houses look extreme good in photos and it is mesmerizing when you see these from distance. But when you actually reach there you might ask yourself - what's so fascinating about this? Beach is pristine and it's lovely to have a swim. It's only about 40 minutes by train from Flinder street station (main train station in Melbourne). So if you have couple of spare hours, why not to capture some photos!

Brighton is the most beautiful beach in Melbourne. Colourful bathing boxes are the main attractions of the place. One can enjoy the best glimpse of Melbourne Skyline from the beach. It's a paradise for Instagramers. The beach is very close to the train station & well connected with the suburbs as well as CBD, just 25 mins train ride from Flinders Street station(CBD). Brighton, Middle Brighton & North Brighton there are 3 stations to reach the beach. One can get down in any of the stops & can walk alongside the beach. The whole area is really attractive. Best place to spend some quality family time.Kids can enjoy at the sea shore while parents can sun bask. Sea gulls are everywhere searching for food & disturbing crowds. North road foreshore children park is in vicinity & always crammed with cheerful kids.

Overcrowded, overhyped and overrated. The actual beach is narrow and not particularly attractive; the front of the bathing boxes are overcrowded with people taking selfies; and basically it’s underwhelming.
There are many better things to see and do in Melbourne and it seems rather pointless to visit this place.
The photos you have seen are enough. Real life adds little if anything

The beach itself is simply beautiful, and the addition of the bathing boxes lined up along the beach makes the landscape all the more attractive. The water seemed quite clean, great for a swim, and with a nice view of Melbourne in the distance.

Brighton Beach is really made up of a few smaller beaches that connect. You have Middle Brighton [includes the pier], Brighton itself, Dendy Street Beach, Hollows Beach to Green Point.
It does get very busy in the Summer months, especially the Dendy Street Beach part as the Brighton Bathing Boxes are there. It is a popular area for the locals and tourists alike to exercise - SUPing, swimming, walking, dog walking to name a few. There are always photographers to be found and even the occasional model photo shoot. No matter where you walk on the beach you lays have Melbourne looking over your shoulder in the distance.
The Middle Brighton Pier leads to the marina and is only accessible by locals. There is a great waling path and a bike track. You will find a cafe and place to eat here too as well as a large carpark. Another carpark can be found at Green Point - both have app access or ticket machines.
It really is a lovely place to relax. The sand is truly golden and the water quite clear. Keep a lookout for some shells and the Bayside Coastal Artists Trial [see seperate review] - you can learn about the history, indigenous / local culture through the eyes of a range of artists.
A great way to spend a few hours.

Beach was lovely.. Wouldn’t sit too near the bathing boxes though as you’ll get trod on with people taking photos.. There is a nice quiet spot up either end of the beach if you want to get away from it.. Lifeguards all about too so very safe!

We went to the Brighton beach on saturday afternoon and saw this absolutely disgusting behavior of a woman who has come with children and a dog. She put some cola cans to the sea and when we asked her to stop she was furious and used abusive language. When we were coming back we saw her sitting on the beach without even looking at the cans she left on the sea shore. We ended up putting them into a bin.
Better if council can initiate some steps to stop and fine people like them.

Love the front. Great selection of bars and restaurants. People were trying to put their rubbish in bins but they were all overflowing. By the end of the night we actually saw staff jumping up and down on their skips to try to get more rubbish in. And in the heat they stank. More emptying of all the bins would really help improve the scene.

Take the bus from St Kilda beach to Brighton beach, walk 10 mins after get off. The colourful bathing boxes are amazing. Take lots of photos there, remember to take a pic with the Australia box. No restaurant or cafe there. Need to walk around 20 mins to the train station to back to Flinders railway station.

I found food truck there. But just about 2 trucks.
I have not seen much review on the food near Brighton Boxes, we are a family of 3 travelling with a 2 yo girl. We need to have access to a few small meals with the little girl, are there restaurants near the beach? Or we would have to bring our own pack lunch for a day trip?
Thanks!

The Esplanade Hotel is right on the sea , near the jetty - great food.
Lots of eating places on Jetty road (including a nice bakery ) - you will have no problem finding somewhere to eat .

Hi guys, need abit of advice as I will be bringing my elderly father to see the bathing boxes. I have seen reviews that alighting from middle Brighton stn is nearer for the walking distance. As my dad is very slow in walking thus I would like to check if alighting at Brighton beach stn would be more convenient?
I am okay with taking a cab from middle Brighton stn too but am not very sure if cabs are readily available on the way back as well. Appreciate your kind advices or suggestions.

Get a taxi or an uber. There's no way he would be wanting to walk there, let alone walk back.
