I loved it! Starting with freshman year, online was a breeze. My school adapted perfectly to the quarantine conflict, and the teachers did as well. The leniency was perfect, and stress was low. Next, sophomore year was quite fun. The classes were easy and the teachers were also satisfactory. This is the year I joined the Black Student Union Club. This club had potlucks, games, and impactful information about black history. Junior year was quite stressful, as this was the year I started AP classes. However, the teachers were outstanding. Their resources were amazing. In specific, my AP physics 1 teacher was great. She had an answer to every question and collaborated with other physics teachers to create handmade tests for us to take. It was a great experience. Senior year was amazing! Counselors were there every step of the way to help in our college process. One counselor, in particular, provided us with new scholarships in a newsletter every week. Overall, Mclean high is a blast!
It has overall been a very pleasant experience, despite many complaints from my classmates, the school itself has a charm and is very inviting to its students. One of my favorite parts of being at Mclean is its theatre program, which lets anybody audition without any judgement and has been a great community. Along with that, the cross country team encourages teamwork and character growth; often the athletes at this school are also very academically inclined and are overall very well rounded people. One of the worst things I've experienced was a math teacher who didn't know how to articulate the content of our Pre-Calculus course. This set me off track and made me have to do independent study to get back on track. Overall though, the school has plenty of resources to get oneself back on track if needed, and I have never felt alone or out of place in my entire time here.
The school has a large divide between the academics of students. A number of students take over 10 APs and all honors while keeping straight As and a wide range of extracurriculars while other students take no honors/APs with possibly mediocre grades. Though most students are somewhere in the middle, they aren’t nearly as prevalent. As one of those students, it’s easy to compare myself to those who are seemingly perfect and feel as if I’m not doing nearly enough even though I’m doing above average classes.
