      Critics Consensus

Max Rose marks Jerry Lewis' long-overdue return to the screen -- and is unfortunately less than memorable in almost every other respect.

Audience Member Loved it. For anyone with an elderly parent or grandparent in their life, this is life. It's sad and often quiet reflective moments, and getting old isn't always pretty, sometimes families have to take over. Now that Jerry has left us, it's a fitting last movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I hate this sappy, wrist-slit of a bore. A sad old man learns that his late, beloved wife was cheating on him, and he spends the movie getting sadder. Sure it's authentic, but to what end? What is the message here that serves any sort of meaningful purpose? An empty downer and a tonal mess...Jerry Lewis deserved so much better. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Not a good film in the least. Had a LOT of potential and had a very strong third act, but the emotional weight is non-existent due to a crappy script, mediocre acting and poor direction with no clear vision. However that may have been the point of it all that that the reality of the survivor of a couple that has been together for 65 years that it should end this way. Some may say it was a hokey ending and it was from one point of view, but it is more real than some are comfortable with from another. It's all on how you look at it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member My God, thank you for returning Jerry Lewis to us. ?? I was afraid he had given up on making new films. What an incredible actor, he spans generations. This is a deeply touching film about growing old and loving someone for a lifetime. I cried when the credits rolled, I don't ever want to let go of Jerry. His legacy is being The King of Comedy, but he's The King of Hearts too. Love you Jerry. ?? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a little film with a simple plot, but I found Lewis dignified and and mesmerizing. I bet he'll win a few awards, or at least garner some nominations Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Steve Davis Austin Chronicle The script is replete with filler inserted in the name of "real life": bad jokes and silly riddles, spontaneous songs, and improvised scenes in which conversations go around in circles. Rated: C Sep 16, 2016 Full Review Pat Padua Washington Post The movie gains resonance from its look at what may be the final years of a movie legend. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 15, 2016 Full Review Sean Mulvihill FanboyNation.com Max Rose is a movie that scoffs at the notion of aging gracefully. Baker KDHX (St. Louis) Max Rose adds little to the end-of-life theme, but it offers old-timers in a realistic look at old age, old love, and family affairs. Aug 29, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews
