Matthew Perry talks online dating with Diane Sawyer: ‘It was stupid’

Matthew Perry told Diane Sawyer he tried online dating but “rapidly stopped” because it was “stupid.”

When asked by the TV host if he had given dating apps a chance, he said, “I did go and then I rapidly stopped, it was stupid.”

And as for why he’s had issues in the love department, he attributed it to his insecurities.

“It was a combination of feeling like I wasn’t enough, feeling like I was needy, feeling like I didn’t matter so I’d be in relationships that were going great — with wonderful women, funny, smart, wonderful — and my subconscious, I’d get scared and break up with them because I was afraid they’d find out those three things and they would annihilate me,” he told Sawyer.

He managed, however, to get over his trust issues by going to therapy as he learned that he doesn’t need to keep a woman laughing to keep her in his life.

“I know what that is now and I don’t suffer from that anymore,” he added.

The actor — who is promoting his upcoming memoir, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing,” which is out Nov. 1 — previously talked about how his insecurities always pushed him to end every relationship.

He told GQ on Thursday, “I break up with them because I’m deathly afraid that they will find out that I’m not enough, that I don’t matter, and that I’m too needy, and they’ll break up with me and that will annihilate me and I’ll have to take drugs and that will kill me.

“That’s why I break up with these wonderful women that have crossed my path.”

Perry — who previously mentioned that his drug abuse was so severe that he came close to dying — further noted that there are 10 women whom he would “kill to be married to,” but they have since moved on with another man.

“And you’re not supposed to look in the rearview mirror because then you’ll crash your car,” he added. “But I looked in the rearview mirror and I was like, they’re all gone. They’re all happy, which is great, but I’m the one who’s sitting in a screening room by myself. And there’s no lonelier moment than that.”

Before opening up about his insecurities, the actor — who dated the likes of Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts and even made out with Valerie Bertinelli — also confessed that he believed every woman was after his money after previously being burned.

“That was me afraid,” he told People. “That is what I manifest, something that’s wrong with them. And then I break up with them.”

He continued, “But there can’t be something wrong with everyone. I’m the common denominator. I left first because I thought they were going to annihilate me.”

The now-sober actor confessed that he “got burned a few times by women who wanted” his money, which “happens more often than you think.”

Perry was briefly engaged to literary manager Molly Hurwitz. However, the couple called it quits in June 2021.
