They’re still comparably similar. Why do you make it sound like a bad thing?

And Se7en is among his stated influences…

u/NegotiationNo9674 avatar

Exactly.

Reeves has never stated Seven. Ever

Dont downvote me lol show me proof. There is none. I've heard every interview.

The moment where they read riddler’s diaries in his dingy apartment is very obviously a Seven homage. Ludicrous to pretend otherwise.

Did you screenshot these on a calculator?

Echoing everyone else here, it's not a bad thing. I just rewatched se7en and as a huge The Batman fan I noticed several similarities. One example off the top is Morgan Freeman slicing through evidence tape to revisit a crime scene. Extremely similar to when Batman breaks back into the Riddler's apartment.

The movie was extremely obviously inspired by Seven. And that’s not a bad thing.

It’s also extremely inspired by the actual source martial. DC (detective comics) Batman has been a detective in a gritty city up against disturbing killers long before Se7en or any of finchers work was out. Reeves is just the first director to understand this.

It is not. It just has similar influences to Fincher when he was making Seven. Both movies pull from noir and neo noir. Seven is not original.

You'd have to be quite literally blind to not see the Se7en influence.

The Batman is Se7en if Freeman was a poor detective.

Gordon is Freeman. Batman is Pitt.

Doesn't work cuz Jordan is a moron in the Batman and is the lesser detective of the two

Who's Jordan lol

Because there are surface level similarities. But not enough ppl watch old noir so they don't know that those movies influenced Se7en. A lot of those movies also influenced The Batman. Just like fans think Fincher's Zodiac was an influence but it's not. The real life Zodiac killer was the influence as well as Dirty Harry (who's villain was inspired by Zodiac just like the Riddler).

Reeves isn't pulling from 1995 cinema. He's pulling from the early 70's to the early 80's. Neo-Noir detective thrillers and gangster movies and horror movies from that period. Plus a huge emphasis on Hitchcock (who influenced Carpenter, Fincher, DePalma).
