Mary Anne Evans (11 November 1792 – 15 December 1872) was the spouse of Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli.
Biography[]
Mary Anne Evans was born in Tongwynlais, Wales in 1792, and she was married to Welsh MP Wyndham Lewis until his death in 1838. A year later, the widowed Evans remarried to Benjamin Disraeli (twelve years her junior), and, when Queen Victoria wanted to ennoble Benjamin for his services to the nation, Disraeli instead had his wife created "Viscountess Beaconsfield" and take his seat in the House of Lords, as he wanted to remain in the House of Commons. Mary Anne Disraeli was known for her uninhibited remarks and outward silly manner, but she was, in actuality, a shrewd person. She was a great help to her husband as he wrote his books, and she took care of him for over 30 years. In 1872, she died of stomach cancer.
