Azzize Peter, 97, passed away peacefully Monday, April 8, 2024.
Born Jan. 7, 1927, in Kour, Lebanon, she was the daughter of the late Hanna and Marina Saba.
She emigrated to the U.S. from Lebanon with her husband aboard the SS Mohamed Ali El Kebir on Nov. 27, 1950. After the almost-month long trip they disembarked in Philadelphia on Dec. 15, 1950. She arrived in Wilkes-Barre bundled up and certainly unprepared for the cold weather. She ultimately immersed herself into the community and taught herself to speak, read and write the English language. She was a lifelong resident of Wilkes-Barre and member of St. Anthony St. George Maronite Church.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always in the kitchen cooking her Lebanese specialties.
She could often be found drinking her very hot coffee and watching her "stories," which over the years included "Search for Tomorrow," "The Edge of Night," "As The World Turns" and "The Guiding Light." Recently, with the TV volume on high, it was "The Bold and the Beautiful," "The Young and the Restless," "Judge Judy" and "Fox News."
She was preceded in death by her husband, Simon Peter; daughter, Marcelle Lakkis; granddaughter, Leigh Ann Peter; and her four brothers, all in Lebanon, Saba Saba, Fr. Michael Saba, Boutros Hanna and Semaan Hanna.
She is survived by her family, which she cherished deeply. Her son, Simon Peter and his wife, Frances, Wilkes-Barre; daughter, Michelle Weinstock and her husband, Richard, Jenkins Twp.; and was Sittoo to her beloved grandchildren, Chady, Ramonda and Naji Lakkis; Richard and Rebecca Weinstock; and Simon Peter Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Lakkis, Gregory Holland, Olivia and Cassidy Lakkis.
Mommy's legacy, as she was affectionately referred to by many, will always be that she loved unconditionally.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday from the Nat Gawlas Jordan Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a services at 11 a.m. from St. Anthony's St. George Maronite Church, Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Twp.

Dear Michelle, my heartfelt sympathy to you and family on the passing of your mom. I lived on Hill Street in Wilkes-Barre directly across from you and your family in the 1950's and I remember how kind your mom was. I am sincerely sad to read that your sister Marcelle passed away also - I have been in ill health since 1970 so I really haven't had knowledge of wonderful friends such as your family was - my apology and my belated condolence on behalf of Marcelle's passing. Your mom was so wonderful and always so kind. When we moved from Hill Street because of the redevelopment, it was 1960 - then we lost touch with our fine neighbors. My love to you Michelle and your family. I love the picture of your mom and Chady - Eventhough I've never met Chady, his memory of his sittoo is so precious.
