The professional beauty community is mourning the loss of Martin Parsons, an internationally renowned hairstylist and educator, who passed away on October 21, 2019. Parsons was respected by many for his creativity, talent and passion for hairstyling—specifically long-hair, bridal and updos. Originally from Toronto, Parsons shared his passion for hair in sold-out classes and seminars.
Though he was admired for his skill and professional accomplishments, he was treasured by many for his kind spirit and love for his work. His passing sparked hundreds of condolences and dedicated posts on social platforms, including from his own brother Kent, who published a heartfelt tribute a few days after Parsons’ passing. He shared that Parsons’ fascination for styling dated back to when he was only 11 years old. “Our aunt took him to his first hair show in Detroit to see the Zegarelli Brothers with Beaute Craft and from that moment on he realized he wanted to be on stage,” wrote Kent. “As soon as he could he enrolled with Bruno’s Schools in London, Ontario and his journey began. He also added that Parsons was known for always looking sharp with his well-tailored suits and the second he would walk on a stage; the audience already knew they were in for a memorable experience.
But most importantly, Parsons was known for his consistent uplifting message of being proud to be a part of the styling community because of the daily personal impact he is able to make with his students and clients. “’We are in the greatest industry and get to create beauty everyday of our lives,” he would say, according to Kent. “‘Who else can touch so many people in our communities? Stand up and be proud to be a hairdresser!’”
Other tributes include Vancouver-based stylist and balayage specialist Elissa Wolfe who wrote “I owe all my styling skills to Martin! He is and always will remain an icon in every way. His smile could light up a football field! A gentleman and a true inspiration.”
Lee Rizzuto, the owner of Conair/BaByliss and the former chairman of the Professional Beauty Association, also shared that “Martin’s boundless creativity, impeccable style and good nature left an indelible impression on me and everyone who had the good fortune to work with him.”
